‘Think we can leave the estate yet?’ I ask.
‘One way to find out.’
ChapterFive
KRASE
She’s a danger.
I should have realized as soon as she appeared in that cell. I knew who she was, but I figured she was just a human. How much trouble could she be to me? But trouble she is.
I stand before our shared bars and stare at her, asleep now under her blankets, thinking she’s safe from me, as if metal bars and a couple of blankets are a sure defense against me.
Somewhere in my mind, my other half struggles to get free. He’s stronger. Somehow, her little show under the blanket, her breathless moans, and her climax fed him enough to come at me in a way he hasn’t had the strength to for some time. She’s piqued his interest the way she probably intended, the way human women do when they want that high we give them. I’ve always been on the fringes before, deep inside and removed from it, but I remember their faces when we were done with them. Happiness and bliss. That’s what they always want.
But she didn’t count on my interest as well. Unfortunately for her, mine is a little more fatal. An incubus I may be, but this human does not equate to my survival out in the open. It’s time for me to get out of here.
My mind is working against his even now. He doesn’t realize it yet, but I’m close. So fucking close. He thinks I’m a simple beast, but I’m as intelligent as he is. I should be. I’m just the other side of the coin.
He’s pulling hard at his chains, trying to take over, but I push him back. I’m still stronger, and he doesn’t have the tacturn to help him now.
Almost have it.
He realizes what I’m doing and what my plan is.
‘Yes,’ I whisper. ‘The human is as good as dead, and then I’m leaving this prison.’
The physical one he put us in and the mental one at the same time. Soon, there will be nothing left of him. Only me.
He doubles down, trying to break free and save the human in the next cell.
I smile and demon up, doubling in size. I have what I need.
I say the words he’s been keeping from me, and I hear the door to my cell unlock.
I can’t help my laugh as I open it.
Almost free in more ways than one.
My body freezes, and I grimace as I fight him. She’s made him stronger than I thought, and it takes all of my effort to beat him back.
I leave my cell, and I go to hers, forcing out the words he uses the last of his waning strength to try to stop me from saying.
Her cell opens, and I walk inside.
I stalk the room a little, playing even though she has no idea that she’s in terrible danger.
I approach the bed, unable to wait any longer, my claws opening to choke the life out of the unsuspecting human in front of me.
Her eyes flutter open, dazed from sleep, but she realizes quickly that I’m in the cell with her. Her eyes widen, and she opens her mouth to scream.
I don’t bother stopping her from making noise because no one’s going to hear it anyway, but I do grab her throat so she can’t flee. It might be diverting to chase her a little, but all of my effort is going into staying in control of my body, so I don’t really want to exert it now. Once I’m out of here, I’ll find prey to stalk and play with. This isn’t the time.
I squeeze, and her eyes bulge, her mouth moving, no doubt pleading with me to let her go if I’d let her actually get the words out.
‘Hush, little human,’ I coo. ‘Your pathetic existence will be over soon.’
She wriggles around, and I can’t help but bask in it, enjoying her pitiful struggles as she bucks on the stone slab in the final death throes.
