Page 25 of Unexpected Temptation

K ane turned when he caught sight of Amelia and knew instantly something terrible had happened. He raced around the counter and grabbed her by the shoulders.

“Amelia, what’s the matter?”

Amelia stared up at him, almost confused for a moment. When she caught the sympathetic look on his face, she crumbled.

Kane pulled her against his chest and held her while she sobbed.

He didn’t like to see women cry because he didn’t know how to handle them.

Now here was little Amelia crying harder than anyone he’d ever seen, and it was devastating to watch.

He rubbed her back and murmured softly to her.

She didn’t hear what he said, but it helped to calm her enough to stop crying so hard.

The tears still slid down her cheeks, but now they were silent.

Kane grasped her shoulders and leaned back enough to see her face.

“Did something happen to Jaylen? Is he hurt?”

Amelia shook her head and used her sleeve to wipe her tears. A sob escaped when she remembered she was dressed in one of Jaylen’s shirts.

“N ... no.”

He waited for a moment. “Sweetheart, you have to talk to me.”

“She’s here, and now I have to go.”

Kane’s brows snapped together.

“Who are you talking about?”

“My sister.”

“What is she doing here?” he asked.

“She came for Jaylen.”

Kane shook his head in confusion. “I’m not understanding. So what if she came, he’ll just kick her ass out.”

Amelia shook her head. “No, I heard them. They were planning their lives together.”

Kane straightened and crossed his arms. “I just can’t see Jaylen doing that, Amelia. He loves you.”

Amelia sniffed and nodded. “I’m sure he does in his way, but you haven’t seen my sister. Every man who meets her falls for her. He’ll never choose me over her.”

Kane snorted. “Did you try at all to talk to him?”

A sob caught in her throat, and her hands twisted. “You don’t understand. It’s happened my whole life. I-I was engaged at one time, she slept with him, and then threw it in my face.”

“Jesus, she’s a first-class bitch,” Kane growled. “Start from the beginning and tell me everything the shithead and the bitch said.”

Amelia shook her head. “No. Jaylen didn’t do anything wrong. I shouldn’t have stayed.” She tried to pull away. “I can’t say any more.”

Kane used his thumb to wipe the tears that continued to roll down her cheeks. He wanted to cry along with her at the sight of her pain. He’d never seen this extreme, desolate sorrow ever.

“What do you need me to do?”

“Would you go to the...” she choked out, “his cabin, get my things, and my car? I know it’s inconvenient, and a lot to ask, but I’ll pay you for your time.”

“You’ll do no such thing. I’ll do whatever you need.”

“It’s so much to ask.”

Kane hugged her to his chest again. “How about you go to my office and rest while I get it taken care of?”

Amelia took a step back and used both hands to run down her face as she nodded.

“Thank you so much. I’ll never be able to repay you.”

Kane squeezed her shoulders. Although he was still confused, he knew without a doubt Jaylen would never throw Amelia away for her sister. No matter how beautiful her sister was, he wasn’t going to argue with her. He’d talk to Jaylen himself and get it taken care of.

He turned her and pointed. “Go sit in the office. There’s a sofa if you’d like to lie down.”

Amelia nodded and made her way down the aisle and then closed the door behind her.
