Brodie didn’t particularly like having to visit people at their places of employment, but the sooner he spoke to Dorena Mohr, the better. He caught up with her just as she was leaving for the day.

“Ms. Mohr?”

“Maybe.”

Brodie was always amazed at the nerve of some when they interacted with law enforcement. Where was the respect? “Ms. Mohr, I’m Sheriff Brodie Brenneman.”

“I know who you are.”

“I need you to come down to the Sheriff’s Office and answer a few questions about visiting Dustin Haack’s house in Rowland.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Did you speak with Detective Rivas in Rowland the other day?”

Ms. Mohr’s head jerked up. “Maybe.”

“I have a few follow-up questions. It won’t take long. Are you available to meet at the station?”

She sighed an exaggerated breath. “I suppose.”

Of all the women Dustin Haack had trapped with his manipulative ways, Dorena Mohr, in some ways, was the worst. Probably even worse than Renee Corker. Dorena’s defiance, disrespect, and evasion of the questions didn’t make it easy.

Ms. Mohr arrived at the station seconds after he did.

She skidded into the parking lot in her expensive vehicle, tossed him a disparaging glance, then followed him up the stairs and inside.

Brodie led her into the interview room, read her her Miranda rights, and set a bottled water in front of her. “Would you care for coffee?”

“Nope.”

Brodie informed her he would be recording. “It is my understanding you went to Rowland to retrieve some items for Dustin Haack.”

“I don’t know why you’re calling him Dustin Haack. That’s not his name.”

“Then what is his name?”

Mohr rolled her eyes. “His name is Dustin Cays.”

Brodie made a note on his notepad. “What is your relationship with Haack, as I’ll refer to him by for the duration of the interview?”

“We’re dating.”

“Did you find it strange, then, when you saw all of those pictures of another woman on his apartment wall?”

Dorena Mohr muttered a few curses beneath her breath. “Not really. Londyn was his ex-girlfriend, and she did him wrong. I wasn’t worried or jealous or whatever because I know he hasn’t been back to his place since he’s been here on business. He’ll remove her photos once he returns to Rowland.”

“What kind of business?”

“He’s a consultant for a large company out of New York.”

Haack certainly was a slick one. “Do you know the name of the company?”

“He told me, but I don’t remember. If you want to know what it is, maybe you should ask him.”

“Did you ever loan him a vehicle?”

“Yes. He’s borrowed my car before.”

“Tell me more about his relationship with Londyn Siegler.”

“After what Londyn did, I don’t blame him one minute for being upset with her.” Dorena Mohr folded her arms across her chest. “Are we finished?

“What did Ms. Siegler do?”

“They were engaged, and then she broke it off because she was seeing his colleague. She was also stealing money from him, and now she wants him back. Too bad, I say. Dustin is a great catch, but she doesn’t deserve a second chance with him.”

“Where is Haack staying?”

Mohr flipped her auburn hair over her shoulder. “The hotel, not that that’s any of your business.”

“Actually, Dustin Haack, aka Dustin Cays, is wanted for a slew of crimes, so that makes it my business.”

“Yeah, whatever.”

“What hotel?”

Dorena Mohr stared at him, her gaze unwavering. She narrowed her eyes. “Pronghorn Falls Hotel out there at the edge of town by the first exit.”

“Where else has he stayed?”

“How should I know?”

“You mentioned you were dating him, so you would know where he was staying.”

“That’s the only place I know.”

“Has he stayed with you?”

Mohr ground her teeth, and her nostrils flared. “That has absolutely nothing to do with anything.”

Brodie repeated his question. “Has Dustin Haack stayed with you?”

“He has, but he’s not now. There. Satisfied?”

“What is your address?

“You mean you don’t have that accessible to you?” Mohr waited a handful of seconds before rattling off her address.

He considered Dorena Mohr. She was a woman in an honorable profession and seemed somewhat intelligent. What drew her to someone like Dustin Haack? Of course, as Rivas had mentioned, Mohr had recently gone through a painful and difficult divorce. Likely, Haack found her at a vulnerable moment.

“You’re acting like Dustin is a criminal. He’s not. The one you need to go to and talk to about this is Londyn. She has been doing her best to get him into trouble just because he wouldn’t take her back. How’s that for revenge?”

“How long have you known Ms. Seigler?”

“I only met her that time she was in the hospital. She’s not the smartest bulb in the chandelier, driving off the road in a rainstorm.

The humorous part? She thought she could win Dustin back by purposely injuring herself.

That he would come crawling back because she was hurt.

Not the case. He doesn’t want anything to do with her, but she won’t leave him alone.

She’s been harassing him and doing all she can to cause trouble for him. Want to arrest someone? Arrest her.”

Brodie wanted to enlighten Ms. Mohr that the reason Londyn went off the road in the rainstorm was because Dustin Haack ran her off the road, but he knew it was fruitless to try to explain that. “When is the next time you’ll see Haack?”

Mohr shrugged, her shoulders staying by her ears longer than necessary. She pressed her red-lipsticked lips together in a tight line, and for the first time, her frosty gaze darted from Brodie to the video camera in the corner of the room. Sweat beads glistened on her upper lip.

“I don’t really think it’s the sheriff’s department's business to know about my dating schedule.”

“It is when it involves a crime. The way I see it, you can either cooperate or I can arrest you right now on suspicion of aiding and abetting.”

“I have not aided, abetted, or assisted with any crimes. I’m a nurse at the hospital, and I am well-respected with ties to the community.

I am in no way a criminal or hoping to be a criminal.

” She punctuated each word slowly and thoughtfully for emphasis.

“Furthermore, as I mentioned, Dustin. Is. Not. A. Criminal. You have the wrong guy. And he should sue you for harassment.”

Sadly, the world had become a sue-happy place, but Brodie doubted any judge would find in Dustin Haack’s favor on this one. Interviewing Mohr had wasted his time. “I will let you know if you need to return for more questioning. In the meantime, please don’t leave town.”

“If I’m not being charged with something, can I go now?”

Before he could answer, she rose and shoved in the chair, causing it to smack into the table.
