Page 61 of UnConVentional Kiss

Cold sweat broke on my back. Was he nervous? Oh no, was he breaking up with me? I vowed to pick up my socks forever. Fuck. He couldn’t dump me. Not today of all days. Then again, better now than after I’d done what I came to the terrace for. Wait, Beck had given no indication that something was wrong before. Oh god, was I catastrophizing?

I took several deep breaths and stepped in front of Beck, my hands on his hips. My cape billowed in the wind, flapping behind me as I leaned in for a kiss. But Beck only placed a quick peck on my lips and lowered himself to one knee.

“What are you—” I gasped as Beck fiddled in his utility belt to take out a small, blue box. My heart threatened to jump out of my chest, and I wanted to join the whoops around us. Instead, I forced myself to stay calm.

Beck looked up at me with those gorgeous eyes of his and licked his lips. “Cay, I know it hasn’t been long, but you—”

“Hold that thought.” I raised a finger, my hand trembling like a leaf.

Beck’s face froze in a mix of horror and disappointment.

From a pouch masquerading as my Superman belt, I took out a similar box and kneeled in front of him.

“Will you marry me, Beck?” My voice caught as my throat squeezed from holding back tears.

“That was my line.” Beck popped his box open and took my hand. “I will. And will you marry me, Cay?”

“Yes.” I nodded for emphasis, watching Beck guide a simple gold band onto my finger. It fitted perfectly. My red box held a similar ring, and I slid it into place when Beck presented his hand. If I were in a manga, light would explode inside me, and I would float into the air on a cloud of joy.

Beck pulled me into a kiss, his arms around me, his tongue seeking entrance. I opened for him and lost myself in the embrace and the soft kiss. I was so completely his, just as he was mine, and I could imagine our future clearly. It would be full of fun, partnership, and geekiness as we grew old together.

The cheers and applause erupting around us were much more intense than last year. And for a good reason. Even if the kiss the year before had been life-changing for both of us, the kiss now was a promise that bound us together. I pulled away and cupped Beck’s cheeks.

“Why today?” I asked, grinning. “You hate the attention.”

He took my hand and stroked the ring on my finger. “But you love it, so it makes it more than tolerable when I’m with you. Besides, this is our place, and you’re my Superman.”

I blinked away tears. I was ready to scale mountains for him and fight all my insecurities to prove I was ready to catch him if he stumbled. But Beck made me believe I was worth the effort too. Like today.

“And you’re my Batman. Forever.”

“Forever.”
