It was lucky that the twins were at weight and had their lungs fully developed because they were ready to make their entrance sooner than expected. A few nights after our ultrasound where we learned the babies’ gender, I woke to find Sage sitting on the side of the bed, head hanging low.

“Omega, what’s wrong? Do you feel sick?” He’d been having some heartburn lately, but Markus assured us that was normal.

“Something has changed.” He rubbed his belly. “I think I maybe just need to go to the bathroom.”

Before he could get to his feet, I was around the bed and holding out my hands. “Let me help you up.”

“I’ve got this,” he grumbled in a fine imitation of his alpha up until having this omega in my life sweetened my personality. “I’m not an invalid, just pregnant.”

“And that’s why I’m carrying you like this and not over my shoulder.” I cradled him carefully in my arms across the bedroom, but before we got halfway there, we were both drenched, and I froze.

I winced, but I didn’t want to make him feel bad. Being this pregnant, he’d had a couple of little accidents already, and I didn’t want him to feel bad about himself. After all, he was doing all the hard work in this pregnancy. With twins!

“It’s okay, omega. It can happen to anyone.” My toes were making squishy noises as I walked forward again.

“Not anyone,” he said, rubbing his cheek against my bare chest.

“Mostly.”

“Only omegas,” he replied. “Alpha, that was my water breaking.”

“Oh, then it’s not…”

Sage shook with laughter, although I didn’t think being peed on was all that funny. “Did you think I lost control of my bladder all over you? Poor alpha! No, I’m 99 percent sure that’s not what happened.”

Switching mental gears, I realized what was going on. “Then I’d better carry you to Markus’ place right now.”

“I still do need to go to the bathroom, and I haven’t even had a single contraction yet. I don’t think we need to wake him and Sam and gods forbid baby Cody. Let’s just relax and try to enjoy our last night when it’s just you and me here together.”

“All right, but you’ll tell me when you’re having pains so we can get there in time?”

“I promise to tell you when I’m ready to go to the infirmary,” he said. “Now set me down and give me some privacy in the restroom, all right?”

Setting him on his feet, I kept hold of him for a moment to make sure he was stable.

With the babies definitely on the way, I thought I should tell Markus, so he’d be ready when we were, but I wasn’t going to argue with my omega as he prepared to give birth to our children.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay in here in case you need me? ”

“No, I think I can handle this myself.” He laughed again then blinked very fast. “Out!”

“You just had a contraction, didn’t you?”

“Go back to bed, and I’ll call you if I need you, all right, alpha?”

“You’re making me grumpy again,” I teased, backing out. I closed the door but stayed close by, ready to race in if he made the slightest sound of distress. He thought he could fool me, but that expression on his face—contraction.

When the toilet flushed, I stepped away from the door and sat down on the side of the bed.

He emerged, and he was no longer laughing. “Mate, I had a second contraction in there. I think you were right. Maybe just let Markus know it may be soon?”

I was on my feet and stepping into my shorts in about a second. “I’ll go get him.”

“Not phoning?”

Halfway out the cabin door, I stopped. “Phoning? Yes, I should do that. Or maybe I can just carry you over there right now.”

“Just call him, alpha.” He crawled into bed and pulled up the covers. “I think I’ll try and rest a little, see if I feel better.

“You know Markus told us that if your water breaks, we can’t wait too long.”

“I know. Just gonna close my eyes.” And he did, leaving me fighting panic. I grabbed my cell phone and took it outside the cabin with me, not wanting to disturb Sage if he was managing to sleep.

Markus answered on the second ring and said he’d come right over just to check Sage’s progress. I started to tell him not to go out of his way because it was so early, but my bear was having none of it. He wanted his mate cared for by the very best.

Our healer arrived not ten minutes later and shooed me outside while he examined my omega. I paced back and forth, wondering why it was taking so long, but finally Markus opened the door and called me back in.

“How is he, Healer?” I asked.

“He’s getting close, closer than you expected, I think. So, I’m not going anywhere, and neither are you as long as you can be calm.”

“I can.” I could do anything my omega needed. “What can I do to help?”

“You can bring some ice water for us all to drink and settle in. It might be very fast, or we might be here for hours yet.”

Sage groaned, “It’s starting to hurt.”

“You wanted natural childbirth, but I have something if you want pain relief.”

But there was no time because no sooner did he finish speaking than the contractions sped up, almost seeming to roll over one another. I held Sage’s hand, mopped his forehead with a cool cloth, and stayed close and encouraging while he breathed through a stronger contraction.

Markus checked him again and gave me a nod. “You’re doing amazing, Sage. If you want the pain relief, now is the time to do it.”

But my brave omega refused, continuing to ride each contraction until, three hours later, Markus told him to push.

Red-faced and huffing, Sage delivered our little girl right into the waiting arms of the healer. He wrapped her, put her on my omega’s chest, and returned to catch the second, our son, with no time to spare.

I got Sage cleaned up and tucked into bed, while Markus did the same for the babies. He pronounced them perfect, but I already knew that. Perfect just like their drowsy omega daddy.
