EVA
My phone buzzed, and I ignored it. Then again. And again. Surreptitiously, I pulled the burner phone out of my purse.
The Devil
Tick Tock.
When am I going to get those files?
You’ll regret making me wait.
“Everything okay, Eva?” Dr. Parker’s warm voice slid over me.
My face must have shown my disquiet, and I quickly schooled it into impassivity. “Just my dad,” I lied, “letting me know he’s leaving dinner out for me.”
Dad was doing better—he’d gotten a job down at the docks, working under the table for the mafia—but he wouldn’t be cooking for me, that was for damn sure.
I slid my phone into my pocket.
Tonight, after practice, the team would clear out, and then I could slip into Alek’s informal office in the locker room and go through his files.
Please have paper files, I prayed.
No, that was ridiculous. I’d seen Alek flipping through paper files at his desk.
They had to be there.
They had to be.
