‘Good to know, boss,’ she said, nodding her agreement.

‘But just one more thing, Stace. You’ve never disappointed me. If anything, you’ve impressed me more by standing up for what you want.’

Stacey nodded gratefully.

‘Now get out and go and enjoy your long weekend. You’re a married woman, you know.’

Stacey laughed as she gathered her things together and headed for the door.

Kim returned to the Bowl and allowed herself one selfish moment of pleasure that she wasn’t losing Stacey quite yet. Whether the constable knew it or not, she was an integral part of the team.

She was still smiling when her phone began to ring.

She didn’t recognise the number but pressed to answer and then hit the speaker symbol.

A loud automated voice boomed out, filling the empty room.

‘You have a call from someone at Drake Hall Prison. Would you like to take the call? Press one for Yes and two for No.’

Kim’s heart flipped before dropping to her stomach. There was only one person she knew at Drake Hall Prison.

Doctor Alexandra Thorne.

Her finger paused above the numbers one and two on her keypad.

She hesitated for just a second before she made her choice.
