“My honest opinion? He is a threat, and you should eliminate him.”
“Goodness, Taylor. How cutthroat of you. But I’m so glad you said that. You’re not wrong.” Angelie was practically purring.
“Well, I’m not exactly proud of it. But he can’t be trusted. I’ve never had a good feeling about him. And if he wants me to kill you, and I do, then when is it my turn? When I balk at his orders, when I chafe at the bit, he’ll come for me.”
“He won’t.”
“How can you be sure?”
“Because I knew what he was going to ask of you.”
“How?”
The look on Angelie’s face told her all she needed to know.
“Yes. Your instincts are right. Eventually, he would need to silence you. He did the same to me when I joined. My predecessor was in the way and was my first assignment. But you have nothing to fear. I’ve taken care of this situation. Thierry is dead. And the Macallan Group is dead with him. And I am officially a ghost.”
Angelie stood, and gave Taylor a little salute. “Bonne chance, mon amie.”
“What if I need to reach you?”
Angelie walked out of the plane, laughing in delight. “You won’t.”
Jesus.
The woman was ruthless.
And damn if Taylor didn’t like her for it.
The pilot approached her seat. “Are you ready, ma’am?”
Taylor looked at the file folder again, playing with the edge. “Another ten minutes, if you don’t mind.”
“Certainly.”
She flipped open the file and looked at the address. Tamsin lived in central London. Taylor could be there in less than an hour. She could see Mason for herself. She could wrestle her emotions and decide, once and for all, if she could handle this.
But that wouldn’t be fair. Mason was not her blood. This was not her decision to make.
She closed the file and called, “I’m ready.”
The pilot responded by asking her to buckle up, which she did. As the plane shot into the sky, she called Baldwin.
“My God, I’ve been worried sick. Are you okay?” he asked.
“I’m fine. I’m heading home, actually. We did it. She’s safe.”
He blew out a huge breath. “Thank God. Will you tell me—”
“Not a good idea, especially on a mobile. Even if this network is secure. Maybe on a beach somewhere.”
“I like the sound of that. What did you have in mind?”
“An island. Where no one can bother us. No one but Sam and Xander, I mean.”
The silence was deafening. “Taylor,” he said, voice breaking. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
She spun her engagement ring around her finger. “Yes, I am.”
