H e blasted out of the garage like a bullet out of a gun barrel—no hesitation, no braking, and every bit of confidence that we weren’t going to hit anyone. I leaned into the tight turn, feeling it hard in my stomach. Nash and Andrea were right behind us with the engines of their motorcycles loud.
“Riley will make sure we don’t hit a single stoplight along the way,” Sam explained, even though I hadn’t asked.
“How?” I asked. Did I want to know? Probably not. But I needed the distraction. My heart pounded erratically against my ribcage. The tension of the situation was killing me. It didn’t help that Sam’s stress about the situation practically bled from his skin.
“Trust me, you don’t want to know what that kid’s capable of.”
“ You act like hacking the traffic system is hard, ” Riley replied. “ I could do it in my sleep. ”
“And that’s why we don’t ask,” Sam said. “We need as few obstacles as possible.”
“Makes—”
“ Caught one on camera, ” Riley interrupted.
“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath. “We made it all of…”
“Four lights,” I finished for him.
“ Three more coming up on your rear. ”
Fucking great. The group of them teamed back up again, which meant more vampires on our asses.
“Fuck!” He planted his foot on the pedal. “Andrea? Nash?”
“ I ain’t seein’ a damn thing, ” Nash said.
“ Me either, ” Andrea agreed with an edge in her voice. “ But it’s not like I’m riding around backwards, so I can’t see behind me. ”
“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” Sam muttered. He kept on muttering the same phrase over and over as he flew past traffic. “Keep the cops off my ass—”
“ Drive faster, ” Riley ordered. “ They’re gaining ground. ”
“If I go any faster, I’m killing the two of us if I hit something.”
“ Then don’t hit anything. ”
“Oh, he says it like it’s so fucking easy!” Sam exclaimed, swerving around another car. I braced on the dashboard and turned in my seat to stare out the back window. “Do you see anything?”
“Nothing.” My gaze tracked traffic, bouncing off every car and moving object.
Civilian…
Civilian…
Civilian…
“We were supposed to have more time,” he snapped.
“ Vampires are unpredictable, ” Riley said. The kid’s all-too-casual tone as he said it was unnerving. The scoff Sam let out told me he’d had the same thought.
A flash of black caught my attention—moving too fast to be human. I frowned, my head tilting slightly as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing.
“Are they…”
“Are they what?” Sam demanded. “What the hell are you seeing?”
“Are they… running?” I could barely make myself say the words. It sounded insane.
My gaze flicked to the speedometer.
He was pushing eighty.
There was no way they were keeping up with him on foot.
Was there?
