Page 44 of The Wayward Sons & The Vampires of Fortune
Civilian…
“We were supposed to have more time,” he snapped.
“Vampires are unpredictable,” Riley said. The kid’s all-too-casual tone as he said it was unnerving. The scoff Sam let out told me he’d had the same thought.
A flash of black caught my attention—moving too fast to be human. I frowned, my head tilting slightly as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing.
“Are they…”
“Are they what?” Sam demanded. “What the hell are you seeing?”
“Are they… running?” I could barely make myself say the words. It sounded insane.
My gaze flicked to the speedometer.
He was pushing eighty.
There was no way they were keeping up with him on foot.
Was there?
CHAPTER 30
They were fucking running.
The vampires were running.
After us.
As we drove damn near eighty miles per hour.
The little bit of hope I’d had about making it out of there was extinguished. How the hell were we supposed to beat this?
A black blur came out of nowhere.
Sam swerved.
I was thrown back in my seat with the momentum.
“Need to make a fucking left, Rye!” Sam practically shouted. “Right now! Right fucking now!”
Riley didn’t reply, but the lights made a rapid switch. Horns honked and brakes squealed as Sam flew through the intersection.
I rotated quickly, trying to keep an eye on them.
One blur.
Two.
Three—
The window shattered, and I threw an arm up to protect my face from the spray of glass. A hand gripped my forearm while clicking filled the car, its vice grip so tight it threatened to break my bone.
“Oh, come on!” Sam yelled.
The car jerked violently to the right.
Then the left.
