Page 75 of The Vampire's Redemption
Behind him, Gabby’s movement wavered. Joey ducked under her guard, tackled her to the ground, and stabbed his claws into her side.
It all happened so fast. Felix had no time to react.
Blood splattered. Pain lit up his insides. Gabby’s, not his. For a split second, the past overshadowed the present. A sword sticking out of her chest. Her blood cooling over his skin.
No. Not again.
His vision blurred, narrowed to only Gabby straining under her attacker.
With an inhuman roar, Felix punched the vampire in his way then whirled around and kicked the thing above Gabby. Agony. Fire. It didn’t matter.
Only his mate mattered.
He jumped on top of her, shielding her with his body. Agony burned through his back. He heard his flesh tearing.
Terror shot through the mating bond.
Must protect my mate.
The leash on his vampire broke when needles tore down his sides. Another spear of fear. His vision blanked and then all he saw was red.
No one would hurt his mate again.
Everything was red. Movement. Shadows. Shouts from far away. The world was muted yet intense at the same time. He was a being of wrath and fury and violence.
No one would touch his mate.
Kill. Must kill all threats.
Felix.
A sound. So familiar. So lovely. The voice of an angel.
Felix, it’s over.
Mate. His mate’s voice.
The man struggled against the beast. The vampire roared.
Protect my mate.
I’m safe. It’s over.
Gabby. She was alive. Thank God.
Something shifted behind him. Another threat. He whirled around and snarled, ready to pounce. His body screamed in protest, pain lancing down his side and his back until he couldn’t remember feeling anything but white-hot fire searing through his veins.
No, stop!
Movement behind. Then she was in front of him. His perfect angel, unharmed. The red in his vision began to recede.
“It’s over.” Her lilting voice washed over him, cool spring rain dousing his fire.
The anger. The fear. The guilt.
“We’re safe.” She approached him as one would a lioness guarding its cub. How strange. As if he would ever hurt her.
“Felix, I’m safe. Come back to me.”
