I give him a look that hopefully conveys,I’m sorry, I’ll fill you in later.
His accusing eyes move back to my sister. “Why would you be pissed at Delilah?”
“Why wouldn’t I? She knew I wanted you, and she took that from me.”
“I was never yours to take,” he replies matter-of-factly.
“You know what I mean.”
“I don’t. The fact that you stole your sister’s fiancé kind of trumps that don’t you think? And for the record, you are not and never will be my type.”
This right here is another one of those moments. Each one of them breathes a little life back into my soul.
She clutches her non-existent pearls, feigning innocence. “I can’t be blamed for him not being happy with her.”
“That is still no excuse for whatyoudid.”
She shrugs. “I have no problems sleeping at night.”
“You’re a piece of work.”
“I know your relationship is fake, Spencer,” she snaps. “So you can lose the high and mighty act.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. Nothing about my relationship with your sister is an act. In the beginning, maybe, but it didn’t take long for Delilah to capture my heart.”
And there it is, my hat trick for the evening.
“Yeah right. Good one.”
“I don’t care what you believe,Abigail.” He speaks her name with such disdain. “This may be hard for you to hear, but I love your sister and one day I’m going to make her my wife.”
She lets out an audible gasp as she glances at me over her shoulder through narrowed eyes. When she storms away in a huff a few seconds later, I know my good deed is soon forgotten.
I’m suddenly the bad guy again.
“Are you okay?” Spencer asks, stepping up to me and wrapping me in his arms. “I told you to wait for me. I panicked when I couldn’t find you.”
“I’m fine, but don’t let your mother hear you talk like that,” I say, making him chuckle. “She’ll start planning our wedding.”
“What was all that about?”
“Abigail’s pregnant.”
“And you gave her the file. Why?”
“Because she’s pretty sure Kayne isn’t the father. She’s going to use his infidelities to break up with him … to save face.”
“Unbelievable.”
“I know.”
“You want to get out of here?” he asks. “I’ve had enough of these people for one night.”
“Soon,” I say. “Can we go back inside for a bit … I have a feeling that Kayne’s karma train is about to pull into the station.”
“You think she’s going to call him out here … tonight?”
“I wouldn’t put it past her. She’ll draw more sympathy if she does it with an audience. She thrives on playing the victim.”
