Orson laughed. "That was going to be the first thing I bought when I got money."
"Well, let me help. How about we head over in a bit and check on Harry, then go shopping. We can get you some clothes for work, some for just hanging out, and run by the grocery store too. We need milk, and since you're officially living here, we should get some things you like to eat too."
"I really don't need all that." Orson looked uncomfortable. "I'm okay with what I have."
Jared raised a brow. "You might be okay, but you'd be better with new stuff."
Orson shrugged. "It's not your place to buy it for me though."
"I don't mind, and like I said, if it's an issue, then you can pay me back someday."
"I'm not comfortable—"
"I know, but it will help you. Just this once bite the bullet and let someone help you." Jared stared at Orson almost daring him to say no.
"Okay, but not a lot. Just what I have to have, and I will pay you back as soon as I can." Orson stared at his plate. "This is so fucking hard. I feel like a charity case."
"Don't. You're not. This is a chance to finally have things turn around. Accept the help. It's not charity, it's just a helping hand. You can pay it back once you get on your feet if you want. I'm happy to help you finally get your life in order and have a chance to live the life you deserve. If I can do just a few simple things to see you get there, I'm glad to do it." Jared finished off his sandwich.
"Thank you." Orson's voice was so soft Jared barely heard it.
"You're welcome." Jared stood. "And dinner tomorrow? You game?"
"Yeah, if you're sure I won't be in the way."
"No, you're actually saving me from feeling like a third-wheel. I'm glad you'll be there. I think you'll like Richard and Tyler. I didn't know until today, but Tyler actually lived on the streets for a while before he met Richard."
"Really?" Orson's eyes went wide. "But he's okay now?"
"Yeah, getting married next month. Just made manager where he works. He's a mechanic somewhere in town."
"I like hearing that. Helps me have hope that I can make it too."
"I know you can." Jared resisted reaching over and gripping Orson's hand. It was best to keep distance between them. He stood and went to the sink instead. "You'll see. Now that you have a job lined up, it won't take any time at all. Anyway, if you want to go get ready, we can go see Harry for a bit and then head out shopping."
"Sounds good." Orson wiped crumbs off the kitchen table. "I'll be ready in about five minutes."
As Jared watched Orson head out of the kitchen, he smiled. Things were looking up. Even if he couldn't get his own life in order, he was more than happy to watch Orson make something of his.
