“Jealousy can be pretty miserable.”

“Then it’ll do.”

Kat’s anger is something to behold. It makes her shimmer, like hot oil on a frying pan, ready to burst into flame at the slightest provocation. It makes her seem like she’s all sharp angles: her bangs, swooping to a point; the rectangles of her glasses; the sweep of her eyeliner; the narrowness of her eyes; the corners of her mouth. I get the sense that in daylight, she’d be slightly pink right now.

I get the sense that if she wanted to, she could slice me to ribbons.

“All right,” I finally agree. “We’ll get Meckler good and jealous, and as a bonus, I get my coworkers off my back for a while.”

Kat takes a deep breath, still regarding me.

“Okay,” she says, then nods. “Okay.”

“Okay,” I agree, and hold out my hand.

Her shoulders square, and she shakes it, her fingers cool even in the warm night, the angles still on her face.

“Pleasure doing business,” I tell her, and her dark eyes flick to mine.

“Pleasure’s all mine,” she says, and I swear she’s almost smiling.
