My husband actually slept now. Between us jet setting all over the country for his business and wheeling and dealing all day, he liked to lay in my lap and sleep while I read and sang. It was refreshing to see him actually get the rest he says had eluded him for years. I loved being that space of comfort for him because Lord knows he was that for me.

“As long as you know I’m going to sleep as soon as you put that pussy on me.”

Moving over to the bookshelf, I looked back and rolled my eyes playfully. “Don’t you always?”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said as he got comfortable on the bean bag. “Come lay on my chest and sing to me. I was up half the night making sure this was ready by the time you woke up. You know I’ll be knocked out by the time you finish the song. I’ll get my gift after my nap. I want to be powered up for this one. I gotta remind you why you married my mean ass.”

“You’re so silly.” I giggled despite myself before crawling up his long frame until my head rested on his chest.

“Thank you so much for coming home, Dev. I love you, baby.”

“I love you too,” I said, tilting my head back, signaling him to give me his lips. After a quick peck, I laid my head back down and snuggled up closer to him. Steel’s fingers tangled in my hair. He massaged my scalp as his breathing slowed to a steady pace.Once I was comfortable, I started to sing our song. “Baby, I would risk it all.”

Devlan

Two Years Later

“We can’t miss Evie’s first day of school.”

“Dev, I swear she’s not even going to remember,” Steel said as we stood next to my car.

“She will though. She’s gonna hate me. She was at my graduation.”

I’d finally gotten my early childhood education degree. I had convinced Steel to let me take care of things on my own and found a job in a day care in town. I’d even gotten Evie free enrollment. I wanted to learn all I could before trying to open a center of my own.

“Baby, listen. If you have my daughter in the middle of her classroom, it’ll be a day she will never ever forget. I need to get you to the hospital, princess,” my wonderful husband said, kissing my forehead before helping me into his car.

“I can’t have a baby, Steel. What are we gonna do with a baby? I can’t believe I let you do this to me.”

“You’re gonna be fine, Devlan. You’re an expert, and the kids have given you plenty of practice.”

“What if she hates me?”

“There’s no one in the world who can hate you.”

“Promise?”

“Cross my heart. You’re going to be a wonderful mother.”

“Not that I had any kind of example,” I grumbled.

Since the day I found out I was expecting, I had been on a roller coaster ride of emotions. I was mostly excited about giving birth to my very own baby girl. Then again, I was afraid that my background would screw up my daughter the way my mom had done to me.

“You’re going to do fine. I’ll be right here with you every step of the way. It’s not like you made her by yourself. Watch how quickly you fall in love with her and naturally know what to do to care for her.”

“I hope so.”

“I love you, gorgeous. We’re all we got.”

“I love you too, Steel.”
