EPILOGUE

QUAID

S heena is alive.

Nothing could have prepared me for this. I stand frozen by the window as she disappears with the witch. I’m so stunned by the sight of my failure that I don’t even feel the disgusting chill that usually runs through me when I encounter magic.

After fighting my misgivings, I broke rank today and followed the informant. We’ve slaughtered dozens of targets since the witch showed up. But it doesn’t feel right. Hunters aren’t weapons for abominations like her to use to further their own plans.

We’ve been blindly playing into her agenda.

When she came to this house, I suspected the witch planned to attack some humans who lived in the area. Then I saw her greet two males on the porch and thought it was some dirty hookup.

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see Sheena. Once I recognized her, it took all my discipline not to reveal myself. My former friend... within my reach after all this time. She looked grown up and as dangerous as I always feared she’d become. Glowing purple eyes. Face monstrously warped.

I’m not sure if she’s working with the witch, but she’s certainly not my friend anymore. She’s living proof of my weakness. I feel a pang of guilt. It’s my fault she even made it to adulthood.

I have no choice but to destroy her.

From my hiding place, I watch the three males react to Sheena’s disappearance. The huge freak is destroying furniture and tearing at his chest like a madman. He came unglued as soon as the light cleared. Meanwhile, the one with tattoos clings to the doorframe, his black eyes wild as he scans the room. The third male holds himself apart, his posture like something from a different time. When he snaps his head in my direction, cold blue eyes lock with mine, and I see the pointed tips of his ears peaking out from his hair.

Fuck. He’s fae. I’ve been made.

It’s tempting to take them all on, but I retreat. One is having an emotional breakdown, but the other two make me pause. All three can wait for now. They’ll meet their end soon enough.

It’s time to right my one wrong and regain my perfect record.

My mission is clear: hunt Sheena down.
