“Y ou!” Doctor Melendez’s fear almost made the compromise worth it. Her attention flew past him to where Mentor watched. Revulsion replaced her fear.

Her reaction was everything he’d hoped for. “That’s more like it. Did you really think you could run away from us?” He turned to Mentor and pictured wiping that pleased expression off his face. “You aren’t worthy.” He brought out the knife.

“What are you doing?” Mentor demanded. “She is worthy. She’s my choice.”

“But not mine. You betrayed us. Me . You were never worthy.” Before Mentor could react, he repeatedly slashed the good doctor’s throat, taking out his anger at her and Mentor with each cut.

“How dare you!” Mentor seethed. “You had no right. She is worthy. I-I loved her.”

He whirled toward the man he’d once admired, the knife raised. “You love no one. Not me. Not your family. Certainly not her. Now, leave me alone.”

This will be the perfect gift for the son Mentor so idolized. Mentor had showed a love toward his son that he hadn’t for his own brother.

He dipped his gloved finger into the blood pooling on the dusty floor and wrote the sentence she deserved. Unworthy. She’d tried to break them apart. Mentor would have been happy to live with her after leaving that prison if he hadn’t stepped in.

“Time to go. They’ll come here eventually. We need to get back to your place. It’s time to find the next beauty.”

Mentor stared at the woman dying on the floor as if he couldn’t fathom what had happened.

“Go.” He barked the order and then smiled at Mentor’s frightened reaction. It pretty much sealed his place in command.

The vehicle waited. He climbed behind the wheel and drove the distance to their special entrance that no one would ever suspect.

From here on out, Mentor’s wants would take the back seat to his. He was now fully in control. Mentor would have no say in choosing his next beauty.

He already had her in his crosshairs and couldn’t wait to make her part of their family.
