Page 34 of The Last Morgan
The last thing Peter saw was Lucy’s face, as he sank into unconsciousness.
The lift doors closed with a soft chime.
They dragged Peter into Lucy's office, dumping him onto a chair like a sack of rubbish. Barnaby glanced up from his computer with a quick nod.
"Don't worry," Barnaby said casually. "I stopped the files. Your personal data never left the system."
Lucy gave a satisfied smile. "Good."
Peter stirred, groaning. Byron stood silently behind Lucy, his presence looming protectively close, his body practically vibrating with tension.
Lucy crossed the room slowly. She leaned forward, hands resting on the desk, staring Peter down as he blinked blearily at her.
"Who sent you?" Lucy asked.
Peter spat blood onto the floor.
"You're already finished. You may as well talk." Lucy said, without budging.
Peter sneered but said nothing.
Barnaby clicked a few keys.
"If it helps," Barnaby said cheerfully, "I’ve pulled up every illegal transfer you made, every email, every message. I can wrap it up nicely for Carter, our brother who is the Captain of the police! when he gets here."
Lucy arched a brow. "Or you can make this easier on yourself."
Peter's eyes darted between them all, "It wasn’t supposed to be like this," he rasped. "Rebecca said you wouldn't cotton on to what I was meant to do."
Lucy’s jaw tightened.
"Which is?" she asked.
Peter shook his head. "I was meant to get as much information on you as possible”
Lucy stepped closer, forcing Peter to meet her gaze.
"Where is she?"
Peter swallowed hard. "She's here. I just don't know where. But trust me, she will know about this. She'll reach out now that I failed." Angry at his conclusion, Peter started to laugh maniacally, his eyes wild. "You think I'm the only one? You think I know something? No one knows anything outside of what they're supposed to know."
Corey walked up, shaking his head. "Did you forget to take your meds, you crazy fool? Speaking in riddles. We already know you're just a pawn in this game of chess and we will protect our queen."
Barnaby burst out laughing. "Oh my god, bro, that was so dramatic."
Lucy agreed with a smirk. "Yeah, Corey. Bit much."
Just then, the doors swung open, and Carter stepped in. Barnaby ran up to him excitedly.
"Look at you, you brute! How have you been?" Carter laughed as he spoke, pulling Barnaby into a rough hug. "Been great. Loving my new temporary digs. We need to get bubble tea soon." Carter wrinkled his nose. "You can have that. I'll have a regular coffee, thanks." Carter turned to the room, surveying the situation. "Well, who do we have here?"
Barnaby handed him a hard drive. "Everything you need to back up whatever they tell you is here."
Corey quickly broke down everything they had uncovered. Carter listened closely. After catching up, Carter turned to Lucy, his eyes twinkling. "So, how's life treating you, now that you're some super big shot?" Lucy smiled, a genuine, warm smile. "This life is yours too, once we wrap up this madness." Carter smiled “ I’m looking forward to it”. He hand signaled for his officers to take Peter away. Said his goodbyes and exited the building.
Barnaby leaned back with a grin. "That was fun." Rebecca is next I take it.
Lucy caught Byron’s eye. His mouth quirked, just barely.
