He released me and held his arm out. “It seems I’m supposed to escort you, so let’s get on with it, girl.”

“Escort me where?” I asked, closing the door of the penthouse behind me. “Where did Lars take the baby?”

“Due time, my child,” he tisked.

I glanced down and noticed something on the floor. That’s when it hit me. There was a trail leading to the elevator. “Rose petals?”

He helped me onto the elevator, and we rode down to the lobby, me with my hand on my hip and him grinning like the Cheshire cat. “Are we having a family day? Is Babette waiting downstairs?”

“Yes, to both,” he promised when the doors slid open and he took my arm, leading me down the hallway to the gardens. There were more rose petals on the floor, and when we pushed through the doors, I gasped in surprise. The gardens had been transformed into a magical wedding venue. The white carpet leading to the gazebo was covered in red rose petals, and waiting at the end of it was the man I had fallen for instantly. He wore a black tuxedo, and tucked in his arms was his mini-me. Our son was wearing a matching suit and my hand went to my chest.

“Oh my gosh, look at Lam,” I said, my eyes misting over. At nine-months-old, he was as handsome as his daddy was. The day he came wailing into the world, my whole life changed for the better. He was the spitting image of his father, which meant he was also the image of his uncle, the boy who never got to live. We decided Lam would live on in our family in this way. Now our little Lam kept us laughing every day, something Lars assured me his brother also used to do.

“Those are a couple of good-looking guys up there. Do you want to make them yours?” Maynard asked, holding out a bouquet of red roses to me. I took them from him and brought them to my nose to inhale the scent.

Lars caught my eye and winked while Lam wiggled in his arms. He reached his tiny, chubby hands out and clapped them, making the guests smile at his cuteness. “I’m more than ready. It’s time to become who I was always meant to be. Serenity Jäger, the woman who once had nothing but now has everything.”

He patted my hand the way a father would. “Can I have the honor of giving you away?”

I smiled a watery smile and leaned into him for a moment. “I truly believe my father was the one who sent you all those years ago to save me. I think he was preparing us for this day. It would be my greatest honor to have you walk me down the aisle.”

He wiped away a tear from my cheek, and together, we took the first steps toward my forever.
