“Is he, though? He seems to be more of a free spirit. Just like you. He comes and goes, just like I know you will with your travel writing. But I know you’ll always come back to me. And maybe once Kevin is finished figuring out all his feelings of jealousy and betrayal, he’ll come back around too.”
Cody smiled and reached across the table, entwining his fingers in mine. “You’re not just smart and gorgeous, are you? You’re wise and understanding too. You’re perfect, you know that?”
I blushed. “Well, not quite perfect. I still have some work to do when it comes to my irrational fear of sharks. I’m a little jealous of the way you can throw yourself into the ocean so fearlessly.”
“I’ve got just the thing,” he announced excitedly.
“Tomorrow morning let’s take a walk to the next bay.
You can only get there on foot or by boat…
we might give the boat a miss, but there’s a track through the bush we can take.
It’s a bit of a hike, but it’s worth it.
Wait till you see this beach. It’s stunning and completely secluded, and if there’s nobody else there, maybe I can talk you into a little skinny dipping.
” His eyebrows did a mischievous dance and he leaned across for a kiss.
“We’ll pack a little picnic, some fresh fruit, a bottle of bubbly. Sound romantic?”
I kissed him back. “Very.”
The hike was rocky, but we took our time. Cody helped me over fallen logs and boulders, the contents of his backpack clinking invitingly. “That’s the champagne and strawberries calling,” he winked. “Come on, we’re nearly there.”
By mid-morning the heat had really kicked in, but then we reached the crest of a hill and on the other side—
“Oh… my… God,” was all I could manage.
Cody smirked. “Actually, I think it was a goddess who created this one. It’s way too beautiful for a man to have done it.”
The azure bay that came into view, with is white sands and clear glassy waters, was something straight off a postcard or out of a prestige travel magazine, the exact same magazines that Cody often wrote for.
Carefully, though excitedly, we made the hike down to the bay, until soon we were pulling off our hiking boots and letting our toes curl in pristine sand.
As we walked to the middle of the small stretch of beach, I noticed that we were indeed the only living souls here.
I pirouetted in the sand, looking around us in disbelief. “How is this possible?”
Cody unloaded the backpack and wiped his brow, letting out a happy sigh. “How is what possible?”
“How is it possible that we’re standing on very possibly the most beautiful place on earth, and there’s nobody else here to ruin it for us?”
Cody grinned and pulled me close, kissing me.
“Humankind hasn’t completely spoiled the planet yet, and let’s hope we never do.
Mother Earth still has a hidden gem or two up her sleeve.
You just have to know where to look.” He kissed me again, then unbuttoned my shirt and eased it off my shoulders.
“Now, why don’t you put some sunscreen on this delicate skin of yours…
” He kissed me on one shoulder, then the other.
“Then cool off in those beautiful blue waters. We’ll stay in the shallows, I promise.
Away from the sharks. And those killer sea turtles. ”
He laughed and stripped off his own T-shirt.
Then off came his shorts.
And there he was, yet again, naked for all the world to see.
Or rather… just for me to see.
I grinned, glanced around once, then stripped off my own shorts.
Cody’s face lit up at the sight of me naked before him, our bodies shiny with sweat, our cocks stirring with the thrill of the moment.
He clutched my hand. “Come on, my beautiful, bookish nerd. Let’s go skinny dipping.”
I didn’t have to be told twice.
I didn’t want to be told twice in case I lost my nerve.
With my hand in his, Cody charged into the sea, pulling me down on top of him into the cool water, his kisses passionate and salty and sweeter than I ever dreamed.
We swam.
We kissed.
We held each other tight beneath the crystalline waters, our bodies pressed hard against each other, our cocks finding each other and our hands finding them…
Caressing…
Stroking…
Coming in a wave of pleasure as the gentle waves of the Coral Sea washed over us.
Sunkissed and spent, we waded hand-in-hand out of the water and across the sandy beach. Cody laid out our towels as well as a picnic blanket. We both sat, naked, and he set out a platter of mango and pineapple, pawpaw and lychees, and a strange red fruit I’d never seen before.
“What’s that?”
“Red dragon fruit.” He cut it open and held up a wedge of it. “Open wide.”
I closed my eyes and took the fruit into my mouth. “It tastes like you,” I said, licking my lips.
“It does?” he asked curiously.
I nodded. “Tender and sweet. Irresistible.”
He beamed. “I have something else that’s irresistible.” From his backpack he produced a punnet of strawberries and a bottle of champagne still chilling inside an icepack, as well as two plastic champagne flutes.
He poured the bubbly, handed me one of the flutes, and said, “Here’s cheers, to an unforgettable day together, just the two of…” His voice trailed off.
I saw the growing look of concern on his face. “Cody? Is everything alright?”
“Did you put sunscreen on?”
“Yes, of course…” I traced my mind back to us arriving at the beach, stripping off, running into the water naked together. “Actually no, I forgot.”
“Okay, we’ve officially got ourselves an emergency. Stand up.”
I thought he was joking and laughed, then saw the seriousness in his eyes and laughed again, this time nervously. “Cody? What’s the matter?”
“You’re burning. Stand up and let me see.”
I remained sitting on the rug, inspecting my arms. “No I’m not.”
“Babe, trust me. Stand up!” He spoke with such alarm that I jumped to my feet. “Turn around. Let me see your back.”
I felt his sand-covered hand trail down my skin. It felt rough and stung a little. “You’re hot,” he said. “And your arse is starting to glow. Turn back around, let me see your stomach.”
I turned again to face him, my penis now at his eye level.
“Oh shit, we have a red alert here. Or should I say, pink alert.”
“What?”
“Your dick is turning bright pink.”
“It’s always pink!”
“Not that pink! I’ve seen flamingos that are less pink than that. We’re talking cherry blossom pink here. We’re talking strawberry lamington pink. We’re talking Peppa Pig pink!”
I looked down and gasped. “Oh my God. I am Peppa Pig pink. All over!”
Cody was already emptying the backpack until he found a pump bottle of sunscreen.
He stood and spun me about-face again, my back now to him.
“These burns are gonna get worse by the minute. I’m gonna lather you in sunscreen.
It’s too late to cure the sunburn you’ve already got, but it might help cool the skin and soothe the pain before you start to blister.
Once it’s on, we’ll cover you up from head to toe with everything we’ve got and head home.
You need an ice bath and several gallons of aloe vera. ”
“Don’t you think you’re overreacting?”
“Keep still!” He squirted sunscreen on my shoulders. It was cool and I felt immediate relief, which made me realize that my skin was indeed burning up.
Gently he lathered the lotion over my glowing flesh. “How does that feel?”
“Better,” I nodded, the mere motion of my head flaring up the heat in my neck, my ears, my scalp.
“Once I slick you up, you’ll start to feel some relief and—”
Whoosh!
Flap!
“Squark!”
“Fuck! Kevin!”
I wasn’t sure what had just happened behind me until I spotted that wicked white cockatoo flying into the sky…
And in his claws was Cody’s pump bottle of sunscreen.
“Kevin!” Cody shouted furiously. “You bring that back right now, or else…”
“Or else what?” the cocky challenged, perching himself in a tree, one foot on the branch and the other claw clinging to the dangling sunscreen bottle.
“Or else I’m gonna pluck all your feathers off and wring your bloody neck.”
“ Squark! Come and get me, big fella!” With a flap of his wings, Kevin took off over the hill and out of sight.
“ Fuuuuuuck! ” Cody screamed at the sky. He turned back to me, staring at me like I was now some spit roast gone wrong. “We’ve gotta get you home! Right now!”
With every step along the rocky trail back to the shack, my body turned to fire, my skin searing hot and my muscles starting to seize up.
It didn’t help that I was also covered in our two towels and the picnic rug, as well as my clothes and Cody’s shirt.
The items had been tied and twisted around my head, my waist, my arms, my legs, to conceal every inch of me from the sun’s rays, making me look more like some mutant, post-apocalyptic cloak rack than an actual human being.
When we reached the shack, there was no sign of Kevin other than the pump bottle of sunscreen he’d left sitting on the kitchen table.
“My God,” I breathed in pain. “He’s like a serial killer collecting trophies.”
Cody bundled me into the bathtub outside, filling it with water and as much ice as he could get out of his freezer.
But it wasn’t until the sun began to set that I truly felt the fire inside melting away my skin.
Cody had laid me on the bed by that stage, and at half-hourly intervals he rolled me over and smothered me in aloe vera and a medical cream which was used to treat burns.
“I’m so sorry,” he kept apologizing. “I should have made sure you were covered up. This is all my fault.”
“It’s okay,” I muttered feebly. “Although can you roll me over a little slower? I’m feeling kind of dizzy and nauseous.”
“You’ve got sunstroke, on top of the burns,” he explained. “I’m going to give you something to help you sleep. What you need now is to stay as still as possible and rest.”
