She laughed. "Don't look like that. They're perfectly edible. They're one of my specialties."
He chuckled. "They look good," he said, picking one up and taking a bite and nodding appreciatively. After he'd swallowed, he said, "They're not just good. They're fantastic."
Amelia stood a little taller under his praise, and then when she realized what she was doing, she decided she may need to have a chat with herself later, but for now, she was going to enjoy the moment. "I'm glad you like them," she told him. "I'm not much of a cook, but the things that I do make tend to be quick, easy, and still nutritious."
He smiled. "These are damn good. They're just like little omelets rolled up into a wrap?"
She nodded. "They are. Each little omelet's just a single egg, so it only takes a minute or two. You just melt the cheese on, sprinkle the ham in, and then roll them up tight like that."
She could tell by the way he was looking at them what he was thinking. "You're such a man," she told him.
He gave her a mock offended look. "What's that for? I didn't say a word."
She laughed. "No, but I can tell what you're thinking. You're wondering why take the time and effort to make three of them when you could just have one big three-egg omelet. Aren't you?"
He gave her a guilty smile. "Well, yeah. I mean, it seems..."
She laughed. "Yes, but with one big one, it's not the same. With three small ones, you'll at least get one of them hot. One big one wouldn't roll up like that. It'd be a great big thing that you wouldn't be able to bite into, and you'd have to hold with both hands..."
"Oh my God." She slapped his arm when he waggled his eyebrows at her. "Ford MacFarland!"
He shrugged happily. "What can I say? I thought that's what you were going to say when you dived under the covers this morning."
She slapped his arm again. "We can't get into that conversation right now, or we'll never get to work – either of us. My point was that with three little omelet rolls, it's easier to save one for later if you get interrupted. And... Oh, never mind. You don't need to know my reasoning. If you want one big one in the future, I'll make it that way for you."
He came to her and wrapped his arms around her waist. She closed her eyes as she looped her arms up around his neck and he lifted her off her feet. "I don't. I want little ones. I want them made the way you make them." He squeezed her ass as he added, "But if you want one big one..."
She rolled her eyes at him. "Don't push it," she warned. But the sound of his phone ringing cut her off before she could say anything else.
He stepped toward the island for his phone without letting go of her, without putting her down. But she released her grip on his neck and slid down his front. He gave her a sad look, but she smiled and said, "You need to get that. Your day should have started already, shouldn't it?"
He huffed out a sigh. "Yeah, you're right." He checked the screen before he brought his phone to his ear and asked, "What's up, Laney? … Sure, if it fits in with whatever Tanner's doing... That's right... No, I'm keeping him anyway. He's mine... It doesn't matter. I've told you all you need to know – he's mine and his name's Delta."
Amelia cocked her head, wondering why Laney might be asking about the horse. She knew that Laney raised and trained horses. She just hoped that she didn't want Delta. Not that Amelia got a say – it was none of her business, really. She couldn't ride, and... But she wanted to learn, and Ford had said that he would teach her, so...
"Yeah. Come find me when you get over here if you want. I'd like to hear what you think of him, but I'm telling you right now, you can't have him... Yep. Later."
He turned back to Amelia. "Sorry about that. Laney just wants..." He frowned as he looked down at his phone again.
"Does she want him – Delta for herself?"
Ford shook his head. "She's just curious, and it doesn't matter what she wants. She can't have him. Shit. Sorry." He brought his phone up to his ear again. "What's up, Janey?... Yeah. Sorry. I'll be down there as soon as I can." He winked at Amelia. "I just had something come up this morning."
She smiled through pursed lips and slapped his arm as he said, "Yes, I won't be long, but just ask Boone. He should know where they are."
He ended the call and came to press a kiss to Amelia's lips. "I really have to go. Sorry."
She grabbed a paper towel from the roll and placed the remaining two omelet rolls in it with a smile. "The other good thing about small ones is that they're much easier to carry," she told him.
She could only laugh as he wrapped his arms around her again and spun her in a circle before setting her back on her feet. "Yeah, I already noticed that – and I like it."
"Me too. I like it a lot, but I'm trying to help you get on your way and not hold you up any longer."
"Thanks, Lil’ Bit. Are you okay? Do you have a busy day at work lined up?"
"I always have a busy day at work, but I enjoy it, so it's a good thing."
"Okay, then. Well, I guess I'll see you back here tonight..." He scowled when his phone beeped again and put his omelets down while he checked the screen. As he tapped away, Amelia made the most of the moment to fill a travel mug with coffee for him.
