Shaking my head, I remembered the small white apron wrapped around my waist. “Here.” I tugged out the Gucci sunglasses each of us were told to give our guests.
“I guess this place was worth the cost.” She put them on after looking at the brand symbol.
“What do the men do here? All I’ve done is get a massage and a facial, then sat out here baking in the sun.”
“I’m not sure. I don’t work down there,” I answered and saw one of the other girls looking at me.
“Down there? They have my husband in a dungeon?” She laughed. I laughed with her, knowing there was a possibility they did.
“Here.” She handed me a wad of cash. “Find out, and I’ll double it.”
“I can’t take that.”
Mrs. Rothschild smiled. “You work for me while I’m here. Take it, and find out.”
Quickly grabbing the cash, I shoved it into my apron before turning away.
“I’ll go grab your lunch, ma’am.”
CHAPTEREIGHT
Standing in the kitchen,my mouth parted. The kitchen staff, all women, were wearing white lingerie. They were giggling and cooking while smiling at the mirrored wall.
“What…” I saw Jamie from earlier. “What are they doing?” My eyes widened.
Jamie shushed me and shoved a tray in my hand before cornering me.
“Are you crazy? You go to the side door and do not cut through the view.” She looked up in the corner of the room.
Fuck. A camera.
“What are they doing?” I repeated as she nodded for me to go back outside.
“Demi, right? Demi?” She knew my name but was trying to act like she didn’t.
I clenched the tray of food in frustration.
“I don’t know, because I’ve never been down there.” Her voice shifted from annoyance to fear.
I couldn’t do this. This dove title wasn’t going to get me anywhere. I had to find a way down to where the men were sent.
I have to become a nightingale.

Mrs. Rothschild spent her day being pampered, and all I did was walk her around to each area and waited on her hand and foot. When she went to her services, I was expected to clean. I thought about the woman who bled out in front of the resort and how I was forced to clean her blood up.
Was she one of the guests? She was removed and had disappeared from the resort. I never saw a man with her. The first few weeks I was here, I wasn’t even allowed to leave the reception area. I was just mopping and cleaning until I was finally assigned this job.
“You can leave.” Mrs. Rothschild lifted her fifth glass of champagne. She and a few other women were sitting together for cocktail hour.
I clutched my hands together. “No, it’s fine.”
“They are having some themed ball for the ladies tonight, and I don’t want you there. I want you to find out what my husband is doing, and why he was so excited to come here.”
“Mrs. Rothschild—” I started.
“Please stop calling me that. Call me Sage. Declan is my third husband. I married him for his money, unlike the rest of these women who actually love their husbands for their receding hairlines, saggy balls, and two-thrust fucks.”
