“We’re going to keep him overnight for observation, just to be overly cautious. But he really is okay. Your wife did the right thing by calling 911 in addition to administering the epinephrine.”
Again, my whole body lit up at his assumption, but like Layla, I chose not to correct him. I didn’t want her to be unable to stay with us now that visiting hours were over. Not that I knew what their exact visitor policies were, but I wasn’t willing to find out.
A thought occurred to me then, and I jerked my chin at the name embroidered onto the front of his scrubs. “Dr. Morgan. You don’t happen to be related to Trevor Morgan, do you?”
He blinked, shock crossing his features before he replaced it with a professional mask once again. “He’s my brother.”
“Wow, okay. Jo’s my little sister.”
“You’re kidding,” he said, a wide grin stretching over his face now. “Small world. Jo’s great. We enjoyed having her at Thanksgiving.”
“Cool, yeah, we feel the same way about Trev.” I paused, scratching the back of my head. Was I going to have to tell him about his brother’s accident? Someone had to have told him, right? Standing straighter, I searched his face. “Have you, uh, heard from him? They were on a day trip today …”
“Ah, yes.” He rolled his shoulders and sighed heavily. “Our mom called me. I wish I could have gone down there with them, but no one else could cover the night shift. They’ve been keeping me updated. I know he’s gonna pull through. Dude’s way too tough to be taken out by a measly mountain, anyway.”
I laughed, really seeing the family resemblance now that I knew for sure. He wasn’t a dead ringer for Jason Momoa, since he had a closely cropped haircut, a cleanly shaved jaw, and no tattoos in sight. But size-wise? These guys were practically mountains, themselves. And so were the two other brothers I’d met earlier that night.
“I just came from there,” I told him. “I went to be with Jo and make sure she wasn’t alone. They wouldn’t let her in until his family showed up, and she was a mess. He seemed to be doing well when I left.”
“Good, thanks for letting me know.” He looked down at his watch, nodding toward Grayson’s room. “I’m gonna check in on your son, and then I need to see about a few more patients.”
“Sounds good.”
We started for the room, but then he turned around again, a small smile tugging the corner of his mouth up. “Hey, for whatever it’s worth, I can promise you my brother would never let what happened to him happen to Jo. He loves her like crazy. I don’t know if you’re as protective of your sister as we are of ours, but I’m telling you, you have nothing to worry about.”
I chuckled. “Thanks. Good to know.”
And it was. Because as we stepped into the room to check on my son, I knew there was nothing that could tear Layla and me apart after everything we’d been through. After all of the lessons we’d learned together, we were solid. It was exactly like Thatcher had said outside the ice cream shop. All of the little things had made this big thing so much easier to handle.
There was no doubt in my mind that Jo could be free to stay in Bluffton with Trevor if that was what she wanted. There was no need for her to feel guilty about leaving me and Gray. Given how much she’d sacrificed for us over the years, I figured it was about time she got her own happily ever after.
