He shrugs. “I don’t mind it. But Ashley sounds like a girl who really likes fall and makes it her whole personality.”

“What about Doreen?”

“Sounds like a woman who uses a rotary phone and has a chronic smoker’s cough.”

“This child is going to be nameless for the first month, aren’t they?”

Nolan chuckles and crushes me into his chest. His heartbeat thrums steadily against my cheek, and I let myself melt against him, my favorite place in the world. A place of safety, of bravery, of deep feeling, of all-encompassing, enduring love. The kind I didn’t believe lasted.

“Even with our nameless child, I couldn’t have written a better ending. A better epilogue.” I tilt upward to meet his twinkling gaze, catching the smile tugging at the corners of his lips. It’s so pure, so earnest, it makes me want to cry.

“You mean a better beginning.”
