Moving her head to take in the whole scene, she whispered, “This place is amazing. You have to show me everything.”
Slipping my arm off her shoulders, I took her hand, and off we went. “It looks like we’ll be here until dark if you want to see it all.”
“I do want to see it all. This is what I came for, Warner. I love nature, and even though this is in the middle of a big city, it is still natural.”
As we walked, I thought it was the perfect time to get to know her better. “So, you live alone, right?”
“I do live alone. Remember, I told you about my grandparent’s home that I inherited?”
“I do.” I hadn’t said that right at all. “Have you ever lived with anyone? I mean other than your parents.”
“No.” She pointed to something that scampered up a tree as we approached it. “What’s that?”
The bushy tail disappeared in a hole on the tree trunk. “A squirrel.”
“That was a squirrel? But it was so fat.”
“They get plenty to eat, I’m sure.” I still hadn’t gotten the information I was after. “Being that you’re in your late twenties, I’m guessing that you’ve had some serious relationships.”
“I’ve had a handful of relationships in my life. A few of them were rather short, lasting only a year or so. And then I had one that lasted only a few months. There’s one that’s been on-again, off-again since high school. But it’s mostly been off.”
“And why is that do you think?”
“I think that’s because he’s not the right man for me. If he were, then surely we would’ve figured things out by now, right?”
“I agree.” Although I knew I wasn’t going to be a part of her future, I couldn’t help but feel slightly relieved that she hadn’t found someone who’d taken her heart yet.
How selfish of me.But that was the truth.
