“I love you too, baby. And soon we’ll be man and wife and continue this happy life.”

A dream come true.

Stone

Six months later…

Our wedding was held at the North Caroline resort, the estate that had once been Jessa’s home. We’d invited everyone we knew to come and stay. I stood at the end of the aisle in the ballroom as Jessa made her way towards me.

A long, flowing white gown with a long train glided across the dark wood floor with such elegance it made me want to cry. But as soon as I looked at her gorgeous face, I could only smile.

She handed her bouquet of flowers to her sister, her maid of honor, then took my hands into hers. “You look amazing,” I told her.

“You’re the most handsome man in this room.” She looked around at all the people there. “And that’s saying something.”

“Aww.” She knew how to make me blush sometimes.

Lily leaned in. “What about me? How do I look?”

Jessa gave her a look that asked her to step back. “Come on, this is my day, remember?”

“Sorry.” She leaned back. “Go on.”

We repeated all the words the preacher told us to say, and I meant every word of it. When he said that I could kiss my bride, I kissed the hell of her before we turned to face a cheering crowd. “Woo! Hoo!” I shouted.

Yee-haws and more southern hoots and hollers were made right back to me. All the while, my wife’s smile wouldn’t leave her face. It was the second-best day of my life. Liam’s birth had to have the number one spot. A baby is a real miracle. I’d witnessed that myself.

After our dancing was done and my wife and I were allowed to leave the dancefloor, I spotted some of our cousins from down in the valley of Texas hanging out at the open bar.

“So, how are the Duran brothers doing this fine evening?” I asked as I bellied up to the bar. “I need a beer, stat.” I liked using medical terminology, even if I wasn’t sure what stat was short for.

Cayce, the oldest of the four brothers, answered, “We’re damn good, cousin. Thanks for inviting us to your wedding.”

Chase was second in line. “We needed to get the hell out of Dodge for a while. And by Dodge, I mean Brownsville. We’ve been using all our scientific engineering brains for this man, but he won’t even listen to our ideas. It’s grown bothersome.”

“You guys are all working together?” I hadn’t known that.

Callan, the third one in line, answered, “Yeah. But I’ve got to tell you that our boss not listening to our ideas is making us rethink the industry we’re in. I mean, I know we’re supposed to be thinking about things that have to do with weaponry, but how many weapons does he expect us to come up with?”

The baby of their family, Chance, spoke up. “Sorry for my brothers. They’re just tired of our boss. This is a great wedding, man. I can’t believe what you guys have done for yourselves. It’s amazing.”

“Thanks.” I took a long drink of the cold beer. “So, what kinds of ideas do y’all have anyway?” I was curious, as these guys were all highly educated. When they were younger, their parents had split up, and neither had wanted to keep them, so they were put into a children’s home. It was a sad story, but they did end up being able to go to college for free, so their unhappy childhood paid off in that way. But what a price to pay.

Cayce lit up like a torch. “Okay, so we’ve come up with this idea of making something that can convert ocean waves into electricity. We live near South Padre on the Gulf of Mexico, so we’ve been able to try out small projects, and we’ve actually managed to get small amounts of electricity. But we need more supplies, and we thought, very incorrectly, that our filthy rich boss would want in on this.”

“But he didn’t,” I said, nodding as some ideas began bouncing around in my head. “If you guys have a valid plan and could come and make a nice presentation, I can set up a meeting with my brothers and the Gentry brothers. We’re all in this to help our family make the most out of themselves. How long do you think it would take you guys to get that together?”

Chase scratched his head, pushing back his black cowboy hat as he did. “You know what? I think we could put that all together by next month. Think you could get us a meeting sometime in May?”

“You got it. It’s all about family with us. You guys will see. And, for the record, I think making electricity out of ocean waves is a badass idea. Now, the only thing you have to do to join our elite group is come up with a name for your company that includes the word Whisper. Think you can do that?”

Cayce was quick to say, “Whispering Waves Technology.”

My brows rose, as I thought he’d hit the nail right on the head. “You might just have something there, boys. Only time will tell. See you in May.”

And our happily ever afters just keep on coming.
