“Well, I got to see Moric,” he says, “so that’s a plus.”
“Moric?”
“My Dobermann.”
Smiling, I shake my head. “Why am I not surprised?”
“What?”
“You look like the kinda guy who’d have a Dobermann.”
He laughs. “I’m not even going to pretend that I understand what that means.”
“So, what about your girlfriend?” I prod. “You weren’t excited to see her?”
“We broke up eleven months ago.”
“Oh.”
Lame much, Kenny? Fishing to find out if he’s got a woman? He’ll know for sure now that you’re feeling things.
After a long moment, while adjusting something on the camera which is still trained on me, he asks, “What are you most passionate about, Kendra Tisdale?”
“Weed.”
He bursts out in laughter. “Are you serious?”
I shrug. “It’s the truth.”
“Okay. I’ll take it,” he accepts. “Now,whoare you most passionate about?”
“My two brothers. Scratch and Grunt.”
“Scratch and Grunt? Damn, sound like two big badasses waiting to beat me to a pulp for their sister.”
“They are, and they will.” I’ve got a full smile on my face now. “They took care of me in foster care, protected me, defended me.”
There’s a long, long pause from him before he asks, “What was that like? Foster care.”
“Shitty.”
“Your brothers, are they in a biker gang? Is that why you’re cool with all those bikers?”
“It’s not agang, it’s a club,” I correct. “And yeah, they are. Well, only one of them now. And he’s currently deployed in Afghanistan. The other one’s started a new life in tech or whatever.”
“Wait, Grunt—are you talking about Nero?”
I frown. “Ah, yeah. Forgot he told me you’re Eric’s brother.”
“Hm, so you talk to big brother about me, huh?”
“Obviously.”
“Does he want to kick my ass?”
“Only if you misbehave.”
“And what, Miss Tisdale, is ‘misbehaving’ for you?”
