Page 41 of The Baby Hex (Mori’s Mementos #2)

Mori

Preston was debating whether or not he wanted to put his shoes on for the walk to Pierce and Crilus’s house to meet the new baby.

Over the family link, I picked up that they named her Hex.

If only they knew how accurate of a name that was for her.

I tried not to hold what I knew about her past life against the newborn, but I’d never forget how that woman meddled in everyone’s life and fought against my parents and everyone else. I’d keep my eye on her.

“Why don’t you just shi---” I started but the room fell out from under me.

This time I didn’t land on my back inside Dern’s Other World kitchen.

I landed in a crouch, snarling up at him.

We’d spoken a few times since he aided me in letting Teddy know I was locked inside SC’s basement.

We hadn’t quite made up, but I was expecting this yoink.

She’d been reincarnated. Dern hadn’t given me enough time to actually lay eyes on the child.

He wasn’t normally in a rush but death changes everyone in a million little ways.

“You did well,” Dern said, motioning for me to sit down in the chair across from him. “Don’t worry. I don’t have anyone else here to tackle you.”

“That wasn’t funny.”

“Well, you got the last laugh. She’s a crow. Well, and an elf and a wolf. It’s all written in her destiny.”

“What about SC?”

“Sharon Claudis,” Dern sighed. “How I wish I was alive. She’d have been great fun for me to hunt across planets.

I could’ve –” he let out a long, happy sigh as if remembering dismembering an asshole how some might remember the first time they kissed their baby’s head.

“Anyway, stick with Crilus. Not because of the baby. What a fucking name, though, huh? Not my business. Maybe she deserves a name that stands out,” Dern shrugged.

“Stick by Crilus. One of his clients is going to reach out about a surprise left on their doorstep.”

“You’re really not going to apologize, huh?” I asked, because I couldn’t bite back the question any longer.

“For what? For giving you a head’s up about your next assignment?”

“No, for drugging me! Why didn’t you give me a choice in the matter?”

“This again,” Dern rolled his eyes. “I never claimed to be the good guy, Mori. For all you know I’m leading you astray. You know what I spent my life doing, right? You haven’t forgotten? I enjoyed it too! You’re a healer, though.”

“But what did knowing help me to do?” I growled.

“I let you understand what Crilus was afraid of. That’s an important part of being a healer.”

“How would you know? You’re a self-confessed serial killer.”

“Maybe but don’t you think I studied my prey.

Don’t you think I picked apart their lives so that I could find the points of no return?

Everyone who ends up that bad has one of two points: The point they could’ve been saved or the point where someone realized they were destined to be a destroyer of all things good all along and should’ve been put out of everyone else’s misery.

I’m teaching you and knowing it now might save you a headache in the future.

Imagine you’re a normal teenage girl and then get flashbacks to that life during a math test or something.

Uncle Mori might have his work cut out for him if she ever has past life recalls.

Though, let’s focus on the present now, shall we?

” Dern asked. “Stick close to Crilus. You’ll get to watch Hex grow up but also be there when that call comes in.

Don’t jump to conclusions. Sometimes you’ve got to learn when it’s best to keep your mouth shut.

Being all talk and no ears is crazy when you have big pointy ears like you do. ”

“You’re an asshole.”

“I told you that from the beginning. I shot Teddy Moonscale. What part of I’ve always told as much as the truth as I could, don’t you get?” Dern laughed. “Now, get on outta here before I call Ormund to make you some more tea.”

I tried to glance out of the window to see if the backyard looked like Earthside, but I saw a pit hound dash by before the world once again turned to black.

Read on in the next book for more of Mori’s adventures. Little does he know, but each one leads him a tiny bit closer to meeting his true-mate.
