AS I MAKE MY WAY TO the main college building and the office where I’m supposed to discuss my options with someone, I freeze on the spot.

No, it can’t be!

Oh, but it can.

Victor strides toward me with a serious expression on his face. He’s supposed to be in class. I checked and rechecked it three times before agreeing on the time of my meeting, and yet he’s here somehow.

Someone must’ve told him about it. Wow, he has his spies everywhere, or he’s charmed the young assistant into telling him everything or alerting him whenever something important happens.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he asks.

I try to get past him, but he blocks my path.

“That’s none of your business,” I say, but he’s like a mountain and refuses to budge, so I glare at him. “I have a meeting I have to get to.”

“No, you don’t.”

I frown at him. “Yes, I do. And you’ll be happy to hear—”

I don’t get to finish the sentence because Victor springs at me. A yelp escapes my throat, and he clamps his hand over my mouth.

I thrash against him, but he has me in a tight embrace. No one’s around to hear my muffled cries as Victor drags me into the shadows behind the building.

I claw at his chest, trying to get him off me. Before I can reach his face, he slams me against the wall. My breath leaves me in a whoosh, just as I feel a pinch on my shoulder.

I manage to shove Victor back, but my vision is blurry. I open my mouth to scream for help, but I don’t think anything comes out. My throat is dry, and as I take a step forward, the world swims around me. I collapse to the ground at Victor’s feet.

He looms over me, his lips pressed into a tight line, his eyes unreadable. I try to move, but I can’t.

I can’t feel anything anymore.

As dark spots dance in my vision, threatening to close in on me, I only have one thought.

It’s too late.

Victor is going to kill me after all.
