Out of nowhere, a group of hotel employees appeared, wheeling a tray of champagne glasses toward them.

“We have lots of reasons to celebrate.” Pete reached for a glass. “Here’s to a couple who have been through thick and thin. May your future be filled with nothing but smooth sailing.”

While the others congratulated the couple, Carlita slipped in behind Elvira and tapped her on the shoulder.

She spun around. “Hey, Carlita.” She lifted her glass. “Excellent detective work on your part. Congrats.”

“Thanks. Luigi is a good guy.”

“One of the best.”

“So, you promoted him. I’m guessing you gave him a nice raise to go along with it.”

Her eyes slid to the side.

“You haven’t given him a raise?”

“I was holding off to see how he did. You know, in case I had to demote him.”

Carlita tapped her foot on the floor. “Don’t disappoint me. You can do better.”

“Fine.” She placed her glass on the table and reluctantly trudged over to where Luigi and Dernice stood chatting. “I have an announcement. I’m giving Luigi a raise.”

“It’s about doggone time,” Dernice said.

“Thanks, Elvira.” Luigi impulsively hugged her. “Maybe having you as a sister-in-law won’t be so bad after all.”

“You’re welcome. At least you know what you’re getting yourself into.”

“No doubt.” Luigi squeezed Dernice’s hand. “I’m marrying the love of my life.”

Carlita snuggled in next to Pete. “You know what I love? I love a happy ending.”

“Me too.” Pete ran a light hand across his wife’s cheek and kissed her softly. “Me too, my dear.”

The end.
