I squeezed his hand. “I’m great.”
He tilted his head, his unseeing eyes somehow always seeing too much. Finally, he nodded. “That’s good. Give the knife to X before he massacres the cake with his bare hands.”
We talked and laughed for a couple of hours, and then we had to head back to the Academy. Christopher held open the back door of the SUV and I paused. “I’m still mad at you, but I understand.” He gave me a hopeful smile, but I shook my head. “You’re going to have to work harder for my forgiveness than that, Christopher.”
He huffed and closed the door, and I settled into the back.
I waited until we pulled out of Dark River before I let forth the floodgate of questions I had. I’d kept it contained because I wanted to provide a united front with Carmen, but now I needed to know.
“A Wendigo?” I asked casually.
“Yep,” she said softly, looking at me in the rearview mirror.
“They sold their souls, you know.”
“Yep.”
“What shifter was he before that?”
“Wolf.”
“Do you think if he’d been a normal shifter, and not a Wendigo, he would have been your wolf fated mate?”
“Maybe.”
“Does that mean your fated mate would have been an old guy?”
“Probably?”
“Is there like, an exorcism or something we can conduct?”
She turned to look at me. “Are you serious?”
I shrugged. I wanted to know. Blame Stacey’s curiosity rubbing off on me.
“Uh, I’ll ask.”
I smiled at her. “I’m happy for you though, Mouse. You deserve happiness, and a whole harem of hotties who light your fire.”
She snorted. “I see what you did there.”
Christopher huffed, and Mouse rolled her eyes. They started to argue, and I tuned them out.
I pulled out my phone, texting Bohdie.
Me: I’m still mad at you.
Bohdie: Baby, I am so sorry. I thought with my ego instead of my brain. Stacey has chewed me out already.
Bohdie: You’ve never been yelled at until you’re yelled at by a genius. Feel like I'm 10 again.
I laughed softly. I knew that feeling.
Me: I hate being mad.
Bohdie: I hate you being mad. I’m going to make it up to you. Just wait til you get back to the Academy.
