“I heard from a contact that he’s been asking around about you. He tried to burn someone else’s identity in order to find you.”
“Who?”
“Kiah.”
Evie hissed out a breath. “What the fuck does he even want?”
“Who’s Peter?” Declan asked.
“Now that I don’t know,” William said to Evie. “What I do know is that he isn’t somebody you want to fuck with. He’s got deep pockets, and he isn’t happy with how things turned out in Morocco.”
“Morocco?”
Declan gritted his teeth when they both continued to ignore him. Somebody was going to give him some fucking answers.
“Peter got what he wanted in Morocco. He doesn’t need anything else from me.”
William pinned her with a patronizing stare. “Apparently he didn’t. Maybe you should lie low for a bit. Don’t take any jobs where he could track you. Stick with Ken doll here until this all blows over.”
Declan rolled his eyes at the insult. How the fuck did Evie know this guy, and why?
“Thanks, Will. That’s very helpful. It’s also not an option.”
“Suit yourself. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
When William stood, Declan straightened. He didn’t trust this guy, even if Evie seemed to. William sent him a curious smile and turned to Evie.
“Definitely stay close to this one, darling. I imagine he’ll help you out of a tight spot if you need it.”
“I’ll be in touch, William.”
They left the shop, and Evie looped them back around to the chopper. He waited for an explanation while they locked the doors and readied for takeoff, waited as they rose above the buildings and set off for home, but still she said nothing.
“Stop looking at me like that,” she snapped.
He clenched his jaw. “Like what?”
She leveled her gaze at him. “Like you expect answers to questions you haven’t asked yet.”
He held her gaze for a long moment until he finally asked, “How long have you known William?”
“About eight years.”
“And?”
“And what?” Her expression was blank.
Christ Jesus, was she going to force him to extract it all detail by excruciating detail?
“And how do you know him?”
She shrugged. “He helped me get started in my career.”
“What career would that be?” He was seriously losing his patience.
“I…acquire things for people.”
“Uh huh. Legally?”
