I always knew he didn’t love me, he told me often enoughthatI wasnothing but a burden, but I never thought he could do this to me.
Yet as the days passed, and no one came to rescue me, my newreality sank in. Any day now, I was going to be sold, and my living nightmare would truly begin.
Footsteps echoed outside my cell door, and dread pooled in my belly.I’d already had my breakfast, and with the sun shining brightly in the sky, it told me it was too early for dinner.
No one else came to see me, I was left to fester in my own filth, with only a bucket in the corner for when I needed to go to the toilet. Something which Dwayne always moaned about when he had to empty it.
So the question remained. Who was coming to my cell now?
There was only one answer, one I didn’t want to acknowledge.
It was time.
Panic shot through me as I bolted off the cot bed and cowered inthe corner as if it would offer me protection from what was about to come.
It wouldn’t.
I’d searched every inch of the cell hoping to find a way to escape, but aside from the window which was bolted shut, and too high for me to reach, there was no way out.
I was trapped.
My whole body began to tremble as keys jangled from outside beforethe clicking of the door reverberated around the cell. I backed further into the corner, praying for a magical door to appear and open so I could run far far away from this place.
Of course, that never happened.
“Hello, darlin’,”Dwayne drawled as he stepped into the cell, his mouthpulled into a malicious smile.
He’d given methatlook once before, right before he backhanded meacross the face because I couldn’t stop crying. Sincethen, I’d had a bruise on my cheekthathurt every time I wiped away my tears of despair.
“Let’s go, darlin’,”Dawyne instructed, holding the door open so thebright light of the corridor poured into the cell.
I couldn’t move, my feet were glued to the floor refusing to cooperatebecause of the dangerthatawaited, fear gripping me hard.
“Now, princess, or would you like another shiner to match the oneyou’ve already got?”Dwayne snapped, impatiently tapping his foot.
Swallowing the fear, I slowly made my way to him, my heart poundingfiercely, warning me to stop walking. But I didn’t want to risk another smack to the face.
My dad had hit me time and time again over the years, but it wasnever as hard as the whack Dwayne had delivered, and it wasn’t something I wanted to experience again.
When I reached him, he turned and started walking along thecorridor. I followed behind, gaping at the four other locked doors we passed.
Were there other girls in those cells? Were they shaking in fear like Ihad been, wishing for death to claim them because it would have been far easier to face death than what awaited?
Or had they already been sold?
Stopping at another door, Dwayne fumbled with a key before flingingit open and waving an arm, indicating for me to go in. Tentatively, I peeked around to find a small shower room, a towelhanging from a hook, and a bottle of shampoo and soap waiting on the floor.
“Well don’tjuststand there, get your clothes off and shower. You can’tgo to your new owner stinking the way you do,”Dwayne barked, amusement heavy in his voice.
I turned to find him leaning against the door, wicked glee etched onhis face.
“Will you…will you close the door?”I stuttered, my voice scratchyfrom where I hadn’t spoken a word for the last three days.
NotthatI spoke much before, my dad didn’t like me being noisy.
“She speaks,”Dwayne chuckled, taking a step forward, his eyesshining with menace.“I’m glad you’ve found your voice in time to go to your new owner, he’ll want to hear you scream.”
My heart plummeted to my stomach at his words, and my kneeswanted to buckle from the unimaginable fear consuming me. Dwayne’s eyes raked over my body, coming to rest on my breasts hidden underneath the baggy jumper I was wearing.
