She shivered, but didn’t leave her place at the window as the cold draft poured in. “The end of the world,” she said flatly. And I believed it.
Stay Alive
Nate
“You’ve proven yourself untrustworthy,” Derek declared.
I didn’t want to hear it. This had been humiliating enough and I hated how powerless I felt. I’d seen the runes across Sonya’s stomach and I’d been around supernaturals long enough to know a seer’s prophecy when I saw one. No one liked to talk about it, but before I was born there’d been a disturbance strong enough to shake the supernatural community. Actual angels had come in legion, fought off some great darkness, then left as if nothing had happened. The story made its way around occult circles, which was one of my specialties. I learned things. Even as a human, I’d earned a name among supernaturals as someone who got shit done, who knew things I shouldn’t know, and could keep a secret even if my life was in danger. I hadn’t thought much of it until I’d felt the surge of power on Sonya’s skin… power I was not supposed to have. I was human, or at least, I was supposed to be.
“Do you hear me,boy?”Derek spat.
I jerked my head up and met his glare. Let him think he had me. Even the Incubus King couldn’t overcome destiny once it was activated. “What the fuck do you want from me, then?” I spat. “You have the angel. You have the succubus. Why are you even wasting your time berating me?”
Derek growled with warning and I took an involuntary step back. Pissing him off was probably a bad idea, but I was pissed off just as well.
“You, my son, are too attached to the succubus. I see the judgment in your eyes. Don’t you know that a darkness is coming? There’s only one way supernaturals will survive the coming wave.”
I knew what he was talking about. The cycle of death came every thousand years and it took a psychic and her protectors to stop it. This time, something different had happened. An echo had broken through the realms, warning that something bigger and more terrifying was coming. There were more worlds than just the human world. There was heaven, hell, and the ghost realm. Rifts had started springing up all over the place, letting creatures in that weren’t supposed to be here.
Derek knew all this, but what he didn’t know was that Sonya was the prophet meant to stop it all from coming to fruition. She held the seven runes of power on her body… and one of them was linked to me, which meant I’d better stay alive.
“I’m well aware,” I said, clenching my fists to keep the rest of the words from spilling out. I wanted to curse the Incubus King from here to Seattle and back. My fists shivered at my sides instead. “Just tell me my punishment so we can move past this.”
Derek grinned, and it was never a good sign when he grinned.
Just hold on… just a little longer. There were other runes on Sonya’s body. Other souls that would make her unstoppable once she completed the unity of four.
I just had to hold on… and stay alive.
