“Somewhere they’ll never find us.”

She arches a brow. “That’s vague.”

“I like vague.”

She laughs, then winces, clutching her ribs. “Okay. Vague works.”

I shift, wincing when the move pulls my side. Pain spikes down my hip like a hot rod, but I keep my face blank. She doesn’t need to see it.

“They’ll come for us,” I say, voice low.

“I know.”

“You scared?”

She turns her head fully this time. Dark hair matted with blood, bruises shadowing her throat. She should look broken. Instead, she looks like fire that refuses to go out.

“No,” she says. “Not anymore.”

She studies me for a long moment. Then her fingers slip into mine again, squeezing weak but certain.

The city gets closer. The game shrinks in the rearview. But the war? The war’s just starting.

They built me into a villain, but they forgot what happens when the monster falls in love.

And I’m in love with her. Hopelessly. Violently. Forever.

I don’t tell her. I don’t have to.

She already knows.
