Page 73 of Storm Warning

A stricken look grew in Riley’s eyes.

“Even though she’s not working, Ms. Dodd is involved with several charity organizations. If you can’t find her at home, let me know and I’ll track her down.”

“Thanks, Zane. Anything else?”

“A couple of warnings.”

He straightened. “Tell me.”

“Be careful when you confront Thomas. Men like him have everything to lose. If he loses Ms. Street, he’ll lose his cushy lifestyle and his meal ticket. He’ll be more dangerous than regular perps. Distractions around him could have deadly consequences.”

“We won’t forget. What’s your second piece of advice?”

“Not advice, just a warning. Something is off with Ms. Dodd. Things aren’t adding up.”

“Explain.”

“I sent files on Thomas and Dodd. Please read the files before you talk to Thomas and Dodd. Perhaps you’ll figure out what I missed while researching.”

“Thanks for the fast work, Z.”

“No problem. Keep me updated, Andre. Brent assigned me as your tech support, so I need to know everything.”

“Copy that.” Andre ended the call and slid the phone into his pocket. “You heard him. Grab your computers. We don’t make another move until we’ve reviewed the files he sent.”

“Divide and conquer?” Elias asked.

He nodded. “We’ll take Thomas. You and Iona take Angie Dodd.”

Iona’s hands fisted.

After the operatives retrieved their laptops, Andre and Riley set up at the breakfast bar while Elias and Iona worked at the table.

Waiting for his laptop to boot up, Andre glanced at Riley. “Would you prefer to research Christopher’s case? I can read the research on Thomas and tell you what Zane found. I wouldn’t blame you for avoiding the report like the plague.”

“I’d blame myself. I’m not a weak woman, and handling hard things is what Fortress does.”

He gave a curt nod. “Let’s do it.” Andre logged into his Fortress account and clicked on Zane’s email. He turned the computer so that Riley could see the screen.

They were silent for several minutes. Finally, Andre sat back in his chair, sick at heart over the danger Kara Street was in. No doubt in his mind that Miles Thomas was taking advantage of a naïve woman who would one day wake up and realize what a fool she’d been. In the meantime, Thomas was living his best life at the expense of Kara’s trust fund.

“Did you see this?” Riley pointed to a paragraph near the end of the document.

He scanned the paragraph again and stilled. Nausea built in his gut. Oh, man. This was so wrong, and there wasn’t anything they could do to stop it. “They’re getting married.”

“The day after tomorrow.”

“We can’t stop her, Riley. She’s a legal adult who can marry whomever she wants. Our primary focus has to be whether Thomas sent the assassins after you. The rest, including Kara’s bad choices, can’t be our priority. If we have the chance, we’ll present the facts about him.”

“I know you’re right, but it makes me sick.”

“Same. Because he’s involved with Kara, we know he has the money to fund that account. He could have hired those men to come after you.”

“Thomas won’t stop until he achieves his goal, whatever that is. He’s obsessive.”

“He’s doomed to disappointment this time if his goal is you. Thomas will have to go through me to reach you, and that’s not happening.”

“I can take care of myself, Andre.”
