Serenity laughs. “While you get some time out, huh? I listened to your last podcast. Almost made me want to get a critter of my own. You have so many followers now!”

“It’s doing great. The sponsorship around the book deal was a big win. We have a big rockstar talking about his rescue Chihuahua next week.”

“Hell, I won’t miss that one! Okay, we’re almost at the beach now. Time for lunch. I’ll text you about New Year, I can’t wait to see you. Love ya!”

I put the phone on the counter. I’m so happy Serenity’s found a guy she likes. My life has changed so much from when we were both living in the city. I thought I’d messed everything up, but instead I’ve found my own peace and happiness.

I haven’t heard from my father. I suspect Duncan’s cousin Zeus has warned him not to contact me. But Duncan’s big, warm family has welcomed me with open arms. His mom and dad are delighted with their newest grandchild, and Enzo has two cousins close to his own age living right here in Snowflake Falls.

Otto woofs softly at the sound of the door. It’s his special signal that Duncan and Enzo are back. He pads out into the hallway to be petted.

My boys come into the kitchen. Enzo’s wearing a little red cap printed with reindeer. He reaches out his little arms when he sees me.

“Mama! Christmas!”

I stand up and walk over as Duncan enfolds us in his big arms for a family hug. Otto noses his way in too, wrapping around our legs.

I kiss my son, ruffling his dark curls. “Almost, sweetheart. Are you hungry?”

“Yes.” He nods and Duncan walks him over to the table.

“How did it go, beautiful?” My husband asks as I start to take things out of the refrigerator for lunch.

“Podcast is done. And the doctor says I’m right on track. Meeting all my milestones.” I smile and pat my rounded belly.

“Sister!” Enzo shouts and we both laugh.

“That’s right, dude. You might not be so happy once she arrives…” Duncan says.

“Present! Christmas!”

I start making our lunch, my heart full. I can’t wait to grow our family here in this lovely place, surrounded by the family I love.

I’m finally home.
