Father Mathew looked away. Darkness fell over him, and he closed his eyes. Pain flickered across his face. “That is the one I’ve never beaten.”

“What?”

“We are not done with each other, that demon and I. But it is through with you both now. It has no entrance into your lives.”

“It won’t come again? Won’t attack Evan again?”

“It won’t attack either of you again, no. ButIwill see the demon again. I will be fighting it throughout this life and into the next.”

“Is there ever an end?” Were there ever answers?

“You and Evan are at the end of this. Or rather, you are at your beginning. Live your lives in love, and leave the demons and the darkness behind. Leave the fight to us.” He gave Ben an echo of a smile as he started back to the hospital. “It’s what we’re here for, after all.”
