Starred Review— The Blue Strayer : Arana Braveblade , Book One , By Fiona Lavelle

The year is 2243 of the Altered Era, and Arana Braveblade, a talented spell-caster, is snatched from her home in Fraeland, along with her brother and a half dozen others by the soldiers of Thamann Hotaks, the evil leader of the Central Realm, the largest region in the continent of Hemifond in EverWorld. Braveblade engineers an escape from Hotak’s castle with the help of a Blue Strayer, a sort of magical sports car with a mind—and sense of humor—of its own. Her mission is to rescue her brother and the other kidnappees and form an army to take on Hotaks.

This debut novel is a delight. Author Lavelle avoids the clichés that can mar fantasy writing the way Braveblade and her band skirt the deadly vapor pits of Millwud Gorge. Her writing is crisp and to the point, not bogged down with overwrought prose and tedious narrative. Both the storylines and the cast of characters spring from a truly vivid imagination and we find ourselves transported to the world of Hemifond with the same gentle but sure hand with which J. R. R. Tolkien guided us through Middle-earth, and C. S. Lewis, Narnia.

A second book is in the works, and a streaming series is in development.
