She laughed. I rolled her gently to my side, keeping her tucked against me as I brushed the hair from her face. Her eyes were soft and warm as she looked up at me, a small smile playing on her lips.
“I love you,” I said, the words still feeling like magic despite the fact that I’ve been saying them for months now. “More than I ever thought possible.”
“I love you too,” she replied, her fingers tracing patterns on my chest. “Even when you drag me away from family dinner to have your wicked way with me.”
I chuckled, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “You weren’t exactly fighting me off.”
“True,” she admitted with a grin. “But now we have to go back out there, and everyone’s going to know exactly what we’ve been doing.”
“Let them know,” I shrugged. “I’m not ashamed of wanting my wife.”
She laughed, the sound warming me from the inside out. “You’re crazy.”
“Yes. I’m crazy in love with you.” I pulled her closer for another kiss.
As our lips met, I thought about how far we’d come. Life wasn’t perfect. There would always be threats in our world, but with Alisa by my side, I knew we could handle anything that came our way.
“We should probably get dressed,” she sighed reluctantly, pulling back from the kiss.
“Probably,” I agreed, though I made no move to let her go. “Or we could stay here a little longer and let Achille serve everyone his mystery takeout without us.”
“Tempting,” she laughed, “but I’m actually starving.”
“Fine,” I groaned dramatically, releasing her. “But just so you know, I plan on having you for dessert later.”
Her eyes darkened at the promise. “I’m counting on it.”
We helped each other dress. Finally somewhat presentable, I pulled her in for one last lingering kiss.
“Ready to face the family?” I asked.
She nodded, reaching up to smooth my hair. “Ready for anything, as long as I’m with you.”
Hand in hand, we walked out to join our family.
