We stayed up way too late, working on the song.

It was fun writing with pen and paper again, since I’ve grown so attached to typing on my laptop.

Hubert supplied us with more sheets of paper as our work got underway.

I crouched by the coffee table, scribbling away, and Wyatt sat on the couch, strumming, and singing the new hooks we came up with.

I actually feel a little hungover from all the brainpower used. I squint my eyes open, and my smile grows when Wyatt shifts beside me. He rolls onto his side, flings an arm across my middle, and attacks me with butterfly kisses up and down my face.

I squeal and giggle, half pulling away from the sickly sweet blitz.

“Ah, last night was amazing,” he mumbles, flopping his head back down on his pillow. “It reminded me of the times we’d spend in your treehouse. Me playing my guitar, and you writing these wild stories.”

I roll onto my side, blinking the last sleep from my eyes so I can take in his beautiful face. “It really was. I’ve held all those moments, just you and me alone and being creative, so near to my heart. Ah, I’m so happy we got to recreate it.”

He lifts his head. “But it won’t stop there, will it?”

My heart bounces to a blissful beat. “I’ll always be on the other end of a video chat whenever you want to brainstorm lyrics.” I lift my head and peck his lips. “Or anything else for that matter.”

He brushes back my curls. “Thanks, Josie. You’re one in a million.”

It didn’t take much convincing, after we dragged ourselves off the couch last night, to say yes when Wyatt asked me to sleep in his bed.

Once he rolled on his side, I was out like a light.

But waking up next to him is the cherry on top.

This could very well be the last time we’re together, and I want to soak up every second with him.

Wyatt sits on the edge of the bed and hisses a breath, rubbing the side of his head.

I get onto my knees and rub a tight circle on his back. “The headaches?”

Wyatt exhales slowly. “Not as bad as usual,” he mutters. “Just a dull ache.”

“You’d better take your pain meds anyway.”

“Hubert will have them ready.” Wyatt stands from the bed. “Man, I’m gonna miss that guy.”

“He was always around when we needed him.” I get off the bed and move toward the bedroom door. “I guess I’d better get my bags ready.”

Wyatt kisses my cheek as I pass him by. “I’m gonna take a shower.”

I leave Wyatt’s bedroom for mine, feeling lighter than expected.

I’m beyond relieved I’m flying to Ferndale with him, or packing my bags would be torture.

At least I won’t unpack again, and the bags will be ready for my last flight home.

Then the only excruciating part will be finally saying goodbye to Wyatt.

After a shower, styling my curls, and brushing on a fresh face of makeup, I dress in one of my new boutique outfits. I grab my carry-on luggage by the straps, and take one last look around the room. With mixed emotions, I move out into the hallway.

“Ready, cutie?” Wyatt asks, running a hand through his hair as he smiles at me.

The way his arm crooks, the sleeve of his T-shirt rides up, and reveals his tattoo.

I’m a pile of goo as I gaze at him. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

“Allow me, miss,” Hubert says, meeting me in the hall and taking my bag. “A porter will take all the luggage downstairs.”

I look over my shoulder. “Oh gosh. Yeah, there’s all that stuff in the last bedroom.”

“Not our problem.” Wyatt shrugs. “I just care about the guitar.”

Hubert nods. “I’ll ensure the guitar and all other property is taken down to the cars with Miss Bartlett’s luggage, sir.”

“Thanks, Hubert,” Wyatt replies, “for everything.”

“It was a pleasure,” Hubert says. “Hope to see you again at the Gran Palacio Hotel.”

Wyatt pulls his phone from his pocket. “It’s a text from Portia.” He squints at the screen. “It says, uhh...”

I deadpan at him. “Where are your glasses?”

Wyatt grunts and backtrack to his bedroom. I follow him and he snatches the glasses off the nightstand. He fixes them on his face, and checks the screen again.

“Oh,” he says with a nod. “It says to meet on her floor. That’s just one level down, right?”

“Right. It’s the floor I used to be on.”

“Good to know they gave you the second best room in the place,” Wyatt says, pocketing the phone .

“I’m guessing I would’ve moved if I were still down there when Portia arrived.”

Wyatt winks behind his frames. “I wouldn’t have let them downgrade you.”

I gesture to his pocket. “Aren’t you gonna reply to her.”

He bats a hand. “We’ll see them downstairs in two minutes.”

I take a breath for bravery. “Okay, so we’re leaving.”

Wyatt takes my hand. “I’m so glad you’re going with me. The thought of going to where I supposedly live makes me sweat.”

I squeeze his hand. “You didn’t stay up all night thinking about it, did you?”

“Thankfully, the sleep aid knocked me out. I’m sure I would have st-stayed st-stressing all night otherwise.”

Wyatt hands me his glasses, and I place them in their case and slip them into the strappy bag Marsha at the boutique talked me into getting.

just in case, I also get Wyatt’s current pill bottle and sit them inside.

Wyatt really needs extra relief during the flight.

With Hubert organizing the arrival of our luggage, Wyatt and I take the elevator a level down to meet the others.

I can only imagine it’ll be a tight squeeze when we already have security riding with us.

When the elevator doors ping open, we’re hit with a wall of noise. Besides the wall-hugging security, Erika, Randall, Richmond, Lexy, and Thea buzz in the hallway around Portia.

Jenna stands off to the side, holding a tray of to-go coffee cups. She brightens with a smile at the sight of us and we leave the elevator to join her.

“I did a coffee run,” Jenna says, gesturing with the tray of cups. “I still have your order memorized, Wyatt. Oh, and Josie, I didn’t know how you take your coffee, so I got you the same as Wyatt. Hope that’s okay.”

“Uh,” I falter. “Yeah, of course. Thank you. ”

I glance at Wyatt, who squints like he’s solving a riddle. “You got me a coffee?”

Jenna takes a cup from its cardboard holder. “Sure did. Your caramel mocha on almond milk.”

Wyatt shrugs, taking the cup. “Doesn’t sound too bad.”

Jenna tilts her head, eyes widening. “You didn’t remember your order?”

Wyatt puffs a laugh. “I don’t remember ever drinking coffee.”

Jenna’s chin drops. “Oh... Well, I hope you like it.”

Wyatt lifts the cup in a cheer. “Apparently, I did.”

Jenna gives me my cup, and then makes her way over to Portia, who’s still deep in conversation with Richmond and Lexy. Erika’s talking on her phone, and Randall stands next to her, busily typing on his phone.

Wyatt lowers his voice, asking me, “Do you drink coffee?”

I cup a hand over my mouth as I jiggle in a silent laugh. “Nope. But it has caramel and chocolate in it. How bad can it be?”

Wyatt lifts the cup to his lips. “Let’s see.”

He turns with his back to the others and takes a small sip. He drinks, and everything seems fine, until he grits his teeth.

“Uhh, don’t like that aftertaste.”

I smirk. “I’m guessing that’s the coffee part.”

Wyatt taps his cup against mine. “You try it.”

I’ve had coffee when I’m in a bind. Like, swiping my mom’s morning brew when I’m not awake enough for school. I wouldn’t say I love it.

I tip the cup toward my lips and take a sip. Sweetness glides over my tongue. The coffee blends with the nutty caramel and thick chocolate in a surprisingly delicious way.

“Mmm,” I purr, pulling the cup from my lips. “Not bad.”

Wyatt’s eyebrows lift. “Not bad? ”

“I’ve tried coffee before. This is better than anything I’ve ever tried.” I tap my cup against his. “The you-you-don’t-remember had good taste.”

He grins. “That I can believe.”

With blackout sunglasses atop her head, Portia walks over in a tight fitting black jumpsuit and silver pumps. She holds a venti coffee cup in one hand, and a black Hermès bag sits in the crook of her other arm.

“Mornings never get easier, do they,” she says in a soft voice. “Did you sleep okay, baby?”

Wyatt clears his throat, his eyes averting to the floor. “Ah, yeah, fine.”

“Good. We need to be in tip-top shape for the recording booth.”

“Everyone ready to go?” Erika’s voice booms over everyone crowded in the hallway. “Wyatt and Portia, you take the first trip down.”

Portia steps onto the elevator with security and Jenna following closely behind. Wyatt nods at me, and we join them inside. When the elevator doors close, I smile with relief at the silence. Thank goodness, we’ll have a few minutes without Erika’s booming voice.

“You look happy,” Jenna says to me.

“Oh.” I blush, realizing everyone’s reading my expression. “Just enjoying the quiet.”

“You’re really not in this business,” Portia says with a subtle laugh. “If you can’t deal with everyone talking at once, this lifestyle isn’t for you.”

I nod, finding it hard to look her in the eyes. I know Wyatt’s a celebrity too, but Portia is a big name star. And she’s right here. Talking to me.

“Yeah, it’s one-hundred percent not for me,” I mutter at my shoes.

Wyatt takes my hand. “She’s just here for me. Everything got easier once Josie came back into my life.”

Portia awes. “That’s really sweet. It’s so good to have someone in your corner.”

Wyatt glances at Jenna, and then back at Portia. “Just like you guys. You and Jenna seem like close friends.”

Portia smiles at Jenna. “Yeah, we are. I’d be lost without her.”

Wyatt clears his throat, shifting his stance. “Is that what me and my assistant were like?”

Portia’s eyes turn into saucers, and I peek at Jenna and find her squirming.

Portia places a hand on Wyatt’s upper arm. “You don’t have to worry about him anymore. He’s out of your life.”

“But we were close, weren’t we?”

Portia swallows hard, glancing again at Jenna, and then back at Wyatt as she takes her hand off him. “Yes, you were. Like brothers.”
