CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
emma
No Man’s Land
You are my forever home.
His words reverberated in my thoughts, stirring the magic in my cells until a breeze moved through the cabin and colors danced in my mind.
Freshly cut pine, high dollar cigars, and smoked whiskey…
the scent of him filled ever space of my mind.
His tongue worked against me, igniting my desire until I was certain he knew me as well as I knew myself. Maybe better by now.
In all of my life, I’d never thought sex could be like this, my orgasms would block out reality, and Logan provided it all, forcing me to care about nothing but him.
He gripped my hips and scooted me to the edge of the counter until my ass fell over the edge and nearly my whole weight rested on his broad, powerful shoulders.
The hard surface of his muscles flexed. If he wanted, he could shatter my bones, break me in two.
Instead, his tongue thrust into my center, splitting me, dipping deep inside, reaching farther than any other.
He gripped my ass, and his fingernails bit into my bottom. His thumb circled my tight sphincter, pressing gently, teasingly, while he reached for my breast with his free hand. He pinched my nipple, twisting, as he dragged me to the edge of explosion. All the while, his tongue worked frantically.
A wildfire coursed through me, meeting at the apex of my thighs in an inferno. Only one thing could put it out, only one thing would end my agony and give me the ecstasy I craved.
“So close… so fucking close,” I whispered through gritted teeth, panting, trembling. My heartbeat thundered in my ears, and my chest heaved.
“That’s it. Be a good girl and let me in.” His praise slid over my skin, an audible aphrodisiac, melting all logical thought. My toes curled. His groan vibrated my thighs, and I clenched my legs around him, rocking back and forth.
Over and over…
Again and again…
My scream shattered the silence of the tiny home and the woods around as I hurtled up and over the peak. The earth shook beneath us, and the cabin trembled.
Spent, I collapsed against the countertop, panting, chest heaving. I relished the cold of the tile as it cooled the heat in my skin. My useless limbs slid from his shoulders. Standing up or climbing off the kitchen counter were out of the question.
“Come on,” Logan whispered. He pulled on my legs, helped me sit up, and coaxed me into his arms. Then he carried me to the small table in front of the bank of open windows, the place where I’d taken my lonely dinner.
Gently, he eased me onto my back and swiped his arm across the surface, sending the feline sex book flying.
Smirking, he stroked the wetness dripping down my thighs.
“Don’t look so pleased with yourself,” I rasped.
“I did well.”
“So, you did.” You’re the best I’ve ever had, and each time blows my fucking mind.
Chuckling, his fingers worked back toward my center, and he groaned at the sound of light sound of splashing. “Emma, do you know what you do to me?”
“If it’s half as much as what you do to me, it’s a good thing… a very good thing.”
His blue eyes turned smokey with desire, and he leaned over me, dropping his mouth to my breast, and I writhed around him. Fisting my hands in his hair, I pulled him to me harder and arched into him. With a howl, he leapt onto the table beside me.
“Do you think the table will support us both?” I rasped, barely able to hang onto a sensible thought, my voice faltering by the end.
His expression remained tight with control. “We’re about to find out. We’ll just have to save the bed breaking for another time.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Too far,” he muttered.
“It’s a tiny home, it’s only—”
“Still too far.” Instead of dragging me into the bedroom, he straddled me on the table, gripped himself, and pressed his tip to my core.
Squeezing my eyes closed, I took a breath and held it, anticipating the pleasure from what we both wanted.
“Look at me,” he repeated out loud, his voice harsh. Emma, look at me.
I bit my bottom lip, hesitating, suddenly uncertain of what I might see in his eyes.
Emma, please. Anguish reverberated through our bond.
At that, I opened, keeping my gaze low, working up his body as I worked up courage to stare into the depths of his soul. When my gaze met his, passion exploded in my mind—his passion, his fervor, his love. His eyes glowed bright blue.
A burst of wind whistled through the window screens, and I howled as magic swirled around us, filling us and amplifying every sensation. My eyes rolled back in my head.
“No,” he barked. Keep looking at me. I want you to see you through my eyes.
I forced them open. Surely, they were glowing green the way his were lit in icy blue. In his pupils, I could almost make out the feral side of him, the shadowy shape of his wolf form. Unfettered. Untamed. Wild.
An image of me, on the table beneath him, appeared in my mind, and all his feelings came flooding in the moment after. I was…
Everything…
Beautiful…
Incredible…
Magnificent…
His.
A hundred words in his voice permeated my thoughts.
He ignored the eased into me, then, slower than he had to, gentler than necessary for my already soaked lady parts. He gritted his teeth and muscles worked in his cheeks.
I bucked against him, and the length of him slid in. Finally, the reins broke, and he buried himself inside me. A splintering sound filled the cabin, but he didn’t stop.
Neither of us could.
Out and back in, screaming, howling, roaring.
Again and again…
Falling… Falling…
The table didn’t make it.
At least the surface hadn’t broken, only the supports.
In the aftermath and the splintered wreckage of the table, Logan circled me with his arms and laid his head against my chest. “I believe we killed it.”
“If you mean, we’re fucking good at it, yes.” I laughed. “If you mean the table, also, yes.”
He kissed my collarbone. “We killed it on all counts, but I meant the table. Guess I’ll let Olivia know we should replace it. Knew something was going to get broken tonight.”
“Oh, yeah?” I said, covering a yawn. “I didn’t know that this was a Six-Mile cabin.”
“Na, but if we broke it, we buy it. It’s the right thing to do.” He climbed to his feet and reached down to help me to mine, capturing me in his arms.
Our sex had been different this time, unhurried, tender. His feelings amplified mine, sending them echoing back to me through the bond between us. We both felt it all this time, more than ever before. I didn’t have any idea how any fated mates ever did anything other than fuck.
I laid my head against his chest, enjoying the closeness of after. “We have to go back.” I don’t want to.
“We will.” Soon. His arms tightened around me.
“Sooner than I’d like,” I murmured and snuggled his arms.
He kissed the top of my temple. But a sound interrupted our reverie.
I froze, and my ears pricked. “Did you hear that?”
Logan raised his head and peered through the screen into the dark. “What?”
Had it been the sound of a stick breaking in the woods? An animal or… Shit. I stepped out of his arms and crossed to the dining room window.
The upper portion of the glass in the window frame fractured, and shards exploded over the broken dining room table.
I covered my face, ducking away. A flaming projectile sailed over my head, across the living space, and slammed into the stained-glass lamp.
The intricate design broke into pieces, skittering across the hardwood floor.
“Fuck!” Logan bellowed. He hooked his arm around my waist and dragged me away from the window and around the corner into the hallway.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting you out of the line of fire.” He ducked his head out of the hallway, narrowly avoiding another blazing chunk as it catapulted through the air. More followed. “Shit. They’re trying to burn us out.”
I darted into the bedroom, pressed myself flat against the wall, and slid toward the open window for a peek.
Thirteen forms surrounded our cabin, all glowing except for their blackened, rotting arms and legs.
The animals inside me snapped and snarled and growled.
I couldn’t see them all, somehow, I knew there were thirteen. Dammit!
Acheron’s shifter-mages must have been following one or both of us. That meant they were watching Six-Mile and had to have an encampment nearby. If only we could figure out where.
Logan burst into the room. “We have to get out of here.”
“There’s no way without getting caught. We’re surrounded.” It can’t end here.
“Do you have a better idea?” he barked.
“Link with me,” I rasped. “It’s the only way.”
Logan extended his hand, and I grasped it, drawing on a double rush of shifter energy and magic through the bond between us. Energy flooded him, lighting his eyes with a bright blue fire, before it leached through to me.
Pain poured through him, me, and back again. Would it always be such torture to link with him? The bond made sex better than anything else, but it made this bad. My knees threatened to buckle, and Logan stumbled into the wall. Fuuuuckkk…
More. I have to have more to take them out all at once. Tears leaked from my eyes, and a whimpering sob racked me. I’m sorry.
Do it. He threw back his head and howled. His skin bulged and split. All the bulbs in the cabin flickered to life.
“Come on,” I yelped, catching his arm and dragging him toward the front porch. “We have to hurry. I can’t hang on for long.” Neither can you.
The door slammed open, and I stepped out onto the porch with my head held high. Logan staggered after me and leaned against the front of the exterior wall.
I’ll win this—we’ll win this—because we must.
I’ll allow nothing else. I am the multimorph.
I leapt down into the clearing in front of the little cabin. The moon shone on the figures of the would-be murderers. Acheron might need me alive, but he wouldn’t hesitate to flay the muscles from my mate’s bones, little by little.
I won’t let that happen, Logan.
