Jason walked with Sabrina into the Shamat clan hospital.

Or maybe floated was a better description of what he was doing right now.

He looked down to confirm that his feet were indeed touching the ground.

They were a couple and, yes, the sex was mind-blowing, over-the-moon, amazeballs, and every other ridiculous saying he could come up with.

But what brought him to his knees was that she loved him.

She looked over at him and shook her head. “You are looking very smug, Jason Watson.”

“Maybe. But I see a bit of a twinkle in your eye as well.”

She smiled. “Let’s go check on Callie, Kylee, and Misha. If they are doing well, I may send them home later today.”

They found Misha walking toward them in the hall.

“How are Callie and Kylee today?” Sabrina asked.

Misha beamed. “Perfect. Callie is trying to feed her right now. She’s being a little fussy, and I might have been hovering a bit so she suggested I go for a walk.”

“I was going to check on them, but I can wait,” Sabrina said.

“Go ahead. She would probably appreciate you checking in,” Misha said.

Sabrina knocked on the door, announcing herself, and Callie called for her to come in.

Jason slapped Misha on the shoulder. “How are you doing?”

“I’m wonderful.”

“Where are the twins?”

“Kyle is watching them right now. The three of them are making blanket forts in our living room, which she swears will be gone by the time we go home.”

“I’m surprised the rest of your family isn’t here.”

“Babushka is cooking nonstop so that we will have enough food at home for a month. Father has been at the hospital twice already on supposed official clan business . And I am pretty sure that Naya and Lela are keeping Aleksei and Sergei at bay so that we can get some rest. Or try to.”

“That’s good.”

“Bea texted to ask if she could stop by to visit. Griffin has a meeting today with Father, and Bea wanted to tag along to see Kylee.”

That was an interesting combination. “What do you think Griffin and your father are meeting about?”

“Father mentioned that Griffin wanted his input on the plan he is putting together to communicate to the packs under Griffin’s protection. Apparently he wants an outside opinion, and Father is the leader of a large demon clan.”

“Your father does have a gift for communicating,” Jason said diplomatically. Boris was a showman and a great business leader.

Misha chuckled. “That he does. How are you and Sabrina doing?”

Jason smiled and he knew it was a dopey one, since Misha’s chuckle turned into a belly laugh. “So it’s like that, is it?”

He grinned some more. “It is.”

“I’m happy for you, my friend.” Now it was Misha’s turn to smack his shoulder.

“Every day with her is a gift.”

“Yes. And we will all do anything to help her and you.”

Jason nodded since his throat tightened.

Sabrina stepped out of the room and closed the door. “Mother and baby are doing well, Papa, or will it be Daddy?”

Misha shrugged. “Whatever she wants to call me. Although I will tell you, it would be pretty nice to hear her call me Daddy. As soon as Bea gets here, I’m heading home to make sure Kyle and the twins haven’t destroyed anything. I will see you later, yes?”

“We’ll be here,” Jason responded.

Jason and Sabrina headed to her office, and she unlocked the door and grabbed her doctor’s coat from a hook on the door. “Are you planning on following me around all day today?” she asked with a smirk on her face.

“Maybe.”

“Not sure my patients will appreciate you hovering.”

He shrugged. “You already know that I was trained as a medic in the military.”

She rested her hands on his shoulders. “Are you applying for a job here?”

He leaned in and gave her a kiss. A knock on the door stopped him from responding.

“Come in,” Sabrina said.

The door opened and Lucas’s head popped inside. “Here you are.”

“Did we have an appointment this morning?” Sabrina asked.

“Not officially, but I wanted to do a quick exam and take some more blood. I have an idea that I am working on for some gene therapy, and I knew you would be tied up for most of the day here.”

Jason’s stomach twisted. Seeing Lucas was good and bad. Lucas was working tirelessly to help Sabrina, but he was also a reminder of her sickness.

Lucas set the bag he carried on the desk and had Sabrina sit in her office chair. He started his questions, questions that Jason had memorized since he asked the same ones each time he examined her.

“Are you still fatigued?”

“I’m actually feeling pretty rested right now.”

Lucas nodded. “Good. Are you eating?”

She shrugged. “I have been even if I don’t feel like it.”

“What about your apathy toward sex and energy exchanges?”

“We had sex last night,” Jason blurted. He didn’t want their sex to have a negative effect on her health.

Lucas didn’t blink at his proclamation. “And who instigated it?”

“I did,” Sabrina said. “More than once.”

“Did you exchange energy?”

“Yes.”

“That’s a good sign,” Lucas said, looking at Jason as if he was the one who needed to hear it.

Hell, maybe he did. He would never do anything to hurt Sabrina or make her illness worse.

Sabrina had already explained to him what would happen as the Fade progressed. Luckily her symptoms were mild so far.

Lucas opened his bag and put on some gloves before pulling out a bag full of blood draw supplies. He made quick work of things, taking several vials. He then listened to her heart and lungs.

He stripped off his gloves and held his hands over her head. If Jason hadn’t been watching the exam so closely, he would have missed the flare in Lucas’s eyes. Lucas then held his hands over Sabrina’s heart, and his eyebrows pulled together as if he was puzzled, or was that concern?

“What is it?” Jason asked.

“Boris gave me permission to use the hospital lab here, so I am going to run a couple of quick tests.”

Sabrina rested her hand on Lucas’s arm before he could leave without answering Jason’s question. “What are you worried about?”

“I’m not worried. I don’t sense your energy depleting. It actually feels strong right now, which is probably due to your recent energy exchange.” Lucas excused himself.

Sabrina stood and wrapped her arms around Jason. “Well, I’m taking that as good news.”

“Me too,” Jason answered before giving her a kiss.

She took a step back. “I’ve got some patients to check in on.”

“I’ll try and stay out of trouble.”

She chuckled. “You, I don’t worry so much about. Misha and Kyle are another thing. Add the twins into the mix and you never know what might happen.”

She adjusted her doctor’s coat, put her stethoscope in her pocket, and winked at him before walking out of her office.

She was a force. And as much as he told himself not to worry, Lucas’s reaction earlier was troubling.

Since they would need to wait until he ran his tests, Jason could pace the hospital or visit with Kyle and the twins while Misha cleaned up at home.

He gave her a quick call, and she let him know they were going to take a walk around the lake behind the community center since it was actually a nice spring day, and he was more than welcome to join them.

Ten minutes later the twins were running ahead of them onto the deck built over the water as Jason and Kyle stood watching them.

“You seem a bit off,” Kyle said in her direct style.

He rolled his shoulder to work out the kinks. “Lucas examined Sabrina this morning.”

“And?”

“And he actually thought she was doing well.”

Her eyebrows rose. “And that makes you worried?”

Did he tell her that everything regarding Sabrina’s health made him worried?

Kyle patted his arm. “I’m glad you two found each other. We’ll figure this out, together.”

He wanted that to be true more than anything. “How can you be sure?”

“Maybe because I pretty much died and came back to life again. Makes a girl believe in the impossible.”

He smiled but then something stopped him in his tracks. Emotions swirled in his brain, blocking out the world around him.

“Jason? What’s wrong?”

What was that acrid smell that reached his nose, his senses? It was fear. Panic flooded his chest, and he knew without a doubt that it was Sabrina.

“Sabrina. She’s scared. Upset.”

He tried to get his body to turn toward the path that led back to the hospital, but buzzing sounded in his brain, and the world around him brightened. Damn it! Not again. Not now. Sabrina needed him.

Kyle held up her hands in front of her, and Jason growled, “Get back.”

His chest burned and it flashed outward through his whole body as the world went black.
