“Matt,” Luke growled.

“I don’t think Matt Crawford is hurting for money,” Dahlia laughed, and then blanched when both men turned savage expressions on her. “What did I say?”

“What about Victor? Does he have a policy on you?” James pressed, as if she hadn’t spoken.

“You’d have to ask him. He handles everything.”

“He’s your business manager as well?”

Dahlia nodded.

“So, losing you as a client will be a tremendous blow for him.”

“I’m hisonlyclient.”

From across the room, Luke blew a hiss of air through his teeth.

“The only other wild card is the robbery,” James said.

“Why would someone want to kill me over that?” Confident she’d banished the tears, Dahlia lifted her eyes.

“Revenge?” James looked thoughtful. “You handed the photos over to the police.”

“But no one knows about that,” Luke pointed out.

“Unless there is a leak. Every department has one. Don’t forget the press knew that she wascooperating. Maybe whoever it is thinks she saw something important.”

Dahlia’s phone buzzed in her lap. “It’s Victor. He’ll have heard about the shooting. What do I tell him?”

“Let it go to voicemail!” Luke demanded.

“Ignoring him doesn’t make him go away,” Dahlia slid her finger to answer the call.

“Are you all right?” Victor sounded genuinely concerned. “I’ve been trying to call you for two hours! Why didn’t you call me? Peter called. Matt called. Everyone is trying to find you. I’m standing outside your place. Let me in.”

“I didn’t get hurt. I’ve been with the police making a statement.”

Luke gestured to the phone, and after a moment of hesitation, she put it on speaker so they could all hear.

“I talked to the photographer. Everyone on his staff is shaken up, but on the bright side, it keeps the buzz going. Keeps your name on everyone’s lips.”

Luke opened his mouth to speak, but Dahlia held up a hand. “That’s not really a big concern of mine right now, Victor. I’m a little fixated on who’s trying to kill me.”

“You’re right.” Victor sounded conciliatory. “Open up. I brought you a salad from that place you love.”

“I’m not home right now.”

“Where are you? Are you still with the police?”

James tapped Scott’s name with the pen. She didn’t want to bring him up. Dahlia never knew what Victor might say about their history. She believed Victor when he said he would tell the world all of her secrets. The second she signed a new contract, he’d make sure she paid for it.

“Have you heard from Scott?”

“Huh?” It was obvious she’d caught him off guard.

“I was trying to think of who might want me dead—”

“And you thought Scott?” Victor guffawed. “Definitely not him.”
