“I like the sound of that. Are you going to be working all night?”
“No, she’s not. She’s done. You’ve done enough, Jen. Go have fun with your man.”
“Thanks, Mom. If you need me let me know.”
“I won’t. Take good care of her, Murph.”
“I intend too. I need to take care of something, how about you go on out and I’ll meet you at the table?”
“Are you sure? I can wait, I don’t mind.”
“Nah, I’ll be right there.”
Wondering what he was up to, she went out and joined their friends. Halo came over as soon as she sat down and waited for his hug and kiss. They had a connection she couldn’t understand, and it made her giggle that it kind of made Cam jealous.
“Oh my God. He did it,” Rafe said.
“Who did what?” she asked as she looked up from hugging Halo.
Murph was heading across the bar to catcalls and whistles while balancing a loaded tray with beer and mugs. She didn’t understand why they were laughing until he got closer.
“I guess he admits defeat,” Jake said with a chuckle.
The only bet she knew about was the one Meghan and Chrissy had told her about It was over a year ago. The guys bet him if he fell for a woman, he’d have to serve them beer in a pink tutu.
Then he got closer and the crowd parted as he approached the table wearing a bright pink tutu. Knowing what it meant, her heart melted. The worst year of her life was behind her, and there was nothing but blue skies ahead.

Jake couldn’t have been happier for Murph and Sky. They’d both been through hell to find their happiness. It made him wonder if he’d ever be able to convince Dawn to change her mind and move east. As he glanced over at Rafe, he wondered what he’d say if he knew that Jake was dating his sister and had been for over a year. He’d probably want to take his head off.
Stubbornness must run thick in the Buchanan family, but he didn’t give up easily. She didn’t want to get involved with another military guy because of the kids. But he loved them, and he was getting up in years for being an operator. When they talked about it she told him if he did he’d end up resenting her. Yeah, she was stubborn, but also beautiful, smart, and had stolen his heart.
The celebration was in full swing and when his phone vibrated in his pocket. Seeing it was Dawn, he stepped outside since it was too damn loud to hear anything.
“Hey babe, what’s up?”
“Jake, I don’t know what to do. Chase is missing. He didn’t come home after school.”
Fuck. Chase was only eleven, where the hell could he have gone?
“Did you call his friends?”
“Yes, he’s not anywhere. No one has seen him.”
“Did you call the police?”
“Yes, they are on their way over. I can’t lose him too, Jake. I just can’t.”
He could barely understand her. She was crying so hard. “Hold on, Dawn. I’ll get a flight and be there as soon as I can.”
