He rolled his eyes. “Anything but that.”

She lay quietly for a few minutes. The song wasn’t working. “Daddy?”

“Yes, Half-Pint?” The tone of his voice told her this was her last question.

“I love my lullaby, but will you do the thing?”

“The thing? What thing?”

He asked, but he couldn’t fool her. She heard the smile in his voice. “The thing, Daddy. It helps my heart.”

That earned her a warm, tender smile. His eyes were happy. She was still getting used to that, but she loved it.

“It helps my heart, too, babygirl. It helps mine, too.”

He moved closer and lay his head down on her chest, so his ear was right over her heart. And hummed her lullaby.
