I close my eyes and lean back against the stall partition.
Dear God, I normally don’t doubt You or Your existence, but I have to say this is a pretty shitty development. Far be it from me to question Your master plan, but could Youpleasecut a guy a little slack? I had my life together and going well. I finally found peace. I love my husband. And then You toss Ward back in my path? Why? This is abject cruelty.
My eyes snap open at the sound of the bathroom door. I emerge from the stall and head out, returning to the Senate Chamber.
I’m not sure how this day will end by the time I lay my head on my pillow tonight, but I know that it’ll already go down in my personal history books as one of the most memorable days of my life.
Whether or not that’s eventually a good thing remains to be seen. Right now, the odds are heading south on that outcome.
