I don’t need anything. You can get something for me to cook though. Something quick and easy, since it’s getting late. Thank you.

I smiled as I set my phone beside me on the floor.

I was still going through my things and trying to put them in a proper place.

Being here had released so much tension from my body.

It felt like a huge weight had lifted off me.

While I was still unsure if I’d made the right decision with getting into somewhat of a relationship with Glover, I was grateful for his concern and tenderness.

Although his attraction to me motivated his offer for me to live here, I knew it wasn’t the entire reason he did it.

He actually cared about me, and that felt great.

Jumping into another relationship so soon was nowhere near any of my thoughts, despite how attracted I was to Glover.

I knew I needed to debrief from the bullshit with Jaunté.

However, that muthafucka put me in a position to have to depend on someone else.

I was just thankful that Glover wanted to be there for me.

He already had a lot on his plate, but he made room for me.

I would always be grateful for that, no matter where we ended up.

As I stood to put things away in the bathroom, my phone started to ring.

I immediately dropped everything, not wanting to miss a call from Glover.

When I picked up my phone and saw my mother’s number, I knew she was calling me back.

That call I made earlier out of desperation had gone unanswered.

I almost wished I hadn’t called. I slid my finger on the screen to answer it. “Hello?”

“Hey, Delaney. You okay?”

“Hey, Mom. I umm . . . I got into a situation with Jaunté. We’re no longer together. I found an apartment, but they changed my move-in date. I have to wait an entire month to move in.”

“That’s no good. You can’t stay in the house with Jaunté until it’s time?”

“No. He put me out, because I hurt his pitiful feelings. He’s lying about his whereabouts, and he’s cheating on me. I overheard him having phone sex with someone. I called him out on his bullshit and kind of insinuated that I could do it too.”

“So he couldn’t take what he dished out. Typical for most men.”

“Right.”

“So where are you staying? Did you find a place?”

I was trying to wait to see if she would offer for me to stay with her. Instead of telling her I moved in with Glover, I said, “I got a hotel room for the weekend, but I stayed in my car during the week.”

“Why can’t you pay for a hotel for the entire time? You were staying in his house. You should have been saving money.”

That pissed me off. “I have money saved, but I also needed to furnish an apartment. Like a fool, I allowed him to convince me to donate my old furniture because his was newer.”

“Oh, Delaney. You know better. You should have put it in storage.”

“I know that, Mom, but what can I do about it now?”

“You’re right. I’m sorry. Well, umm . . . you wanna crash with me? You can sleep in your old room.”

I was shocked. I fully expected her to tell me to figure it out. It was what she considered tough love. Maybe she had a heart after all. “I’m just getting settled with a friend from the hospital. Thank you for offering, Mom.”

“Of course. I hate I missed your call earlier. Do you need anything?”

“No, Mom. I’m okay now. How have you been?”

“I’ve been good. I just got back from Denver.”

“Oh. What were you doing there?”

“I have a new boyfriend. He lives there. So I went up for a quick visit. He’s supposed to be here next weekend. Maybe you can come over and meet him.”

This was different. It was rare that my mom actually invited me in on her personal life. “Wow. Sure. I would love to. Just let me know what day and time.”

“Okay. You can bring your friend you’re staying with too. It can be like a double date.”

I frowned. “Umm . . . How do you know I’m staying with a man?”

“Delaney, I’m your mother. I know you well. I raised you. The only woman you would consider staying with is me. You don’t trust people easily. So if you’re staying with someone, it’s more than you just staying there. Just because I don’t address certain things, doesn’t mean I don’t know.”

I chuckled. Well, I’ll be damned. “Okay. I guess you do know me.” I laughed, and she did as well. “His name is Glover Israel.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“He’s my PCP. He’s hot!”

I laughed even louder. “This is crazy!”

“Right! I just switched to him a few months ago, so I’ve only had one visit, since I’m healthy. I’d heard a lot of good things about him and how he treats his patients. You met him at the hospital?”

“Yes. We literally bumped into each other. That was how it all began. He saw all my crap in my car when I came back from lunch and practically demanded I stayed with him until my apartment was ready.”

This felt good. I’d never really had a relationship with my mom to where we could talk about things like this. It was always less detailed conversation, like I was talking to a stranger. I couldn’t help but think that this man she was seeing had influenced this change in her.

“That’s really sweet.”

“It is. He’s sent me flowers a couple of times, and he treats me with respect. I just hope things stay that way.”

“If they do, will you still move out to your apartment?”

“Most likely. I need to have my own space for a while. I need to heal from the heartache Jaunté put me through. That doesn’t mean that I won’t move back eventually.”

She chuckled. “I really hope for the best. Jaunté really didn’t impress me the couple of times I was around him, but that wasn’t my business. You looked happy, and that was all that mattered to me. Knowing he put you through turmoil angers me. But one thing I know, you handled things your way.”

“I did. He caught me off guard when he put me out, but I refused to beg him to stay. That’s not my style. I held my head high like I had it all figured out and packed my shit and left.”

“That’s my baby. Well, I need to unpack and get ready for my day tomorrow. I’ll let you know what day next weekend. Most likely Sunday afternoon.”

“Okay, Mom.”

“I love you, Delaney. If you need anything, let me know.”

“Thank you. I love you too.”

“Oh, and don’t hesitate to call Cedric. He’s been out of town, too, but he’ll be back tomorrow.”

Cedric was my father. He and my mom had remained somewhat cordial, but it seemed they were friends now. Since she had to go, I decided to hold my questions about that for another time. “Okay. I’ll call him tomorrow evening.”

“Bye, honey.”

“Bye, Mom.”

I sat on the side of the bed, in awe of the changes I noticed in her.

This was different for us, but I felt like it was needed.

Having someone in my life that I knew gave a fuck about me, to talk to about things, was like therapy.

She had my back, and that helped me release even more tension and hesitancy about the situation with Glover.

If this didn’t work out, I knew I had my mother to fall back on.

When I heard a door close, I knew Glover had made it home.

I went to the back door to greet him like he’d been gone all day.

This felt amazing. My heart was light again and in a short amount of time.

When he opened the door, he smiled big. I couldn’t help but reciprocate what I saw.

I grabbed a couple of the grocery bags from him and kissed his lips.

“Hey. How was your dad?”

“Hey. He was full of shit, but he was fine,” he said, then chuckled.

The man was paralyzed from the waist down, so I thought he meant that in the literal sense until he laughed. When I chuckled, he only laughed louder.

“I just realized where your mind went. Sorry. They make sure he is cleaned at all times. I meant he was talking foolishness today, so that was a good sign that all is well.”

I nodded with a slight smile and set the bags on the countertop and looked in them to see what he bought.

As I looked, he wrapped his arms around me from behind, and my body heated tremendously.

When he nuzzled his nose in my neck, I forgot what the hell I was supposed to be doing.

I spun around in his arms, and he lifted me to the countertop, moving the groceries out the way.

He stood between my legs, still clad with the torn scrubs, and just stared at me.

My breathing had gotten heavy with desire, and I could see his erection through his scrubs. “Glover?”

He licked his lips, then bit the bottom one as he stared at my crotch. “Hmm?”

“If I don’t cook dinner now, we won’t eat. The only nourishment either of us will get will be the vitamins in our bodily fluids we both digest. Let me cook so we can eat.”

His eyes lifted to mine as he slid his hands up the outer parts of my legs.

When he reached my hips, he gripped them, causing my pussy to juice in my panties.

My eyes rolled slightly, and he noticed.

He slid his hand between my legs and finished ripping my scrubs and tore my underwear.

Within seconds, his dick was stroking my insides.

I fell back, my head hitting the cabinets behind me.

He gripped my neck with one hand and still had a hold of my hip with the other as he expertly stroked me into euphoria.

“Damn, Delaney. Shit! I missed you, girl.”

“I missed . . . you . . . too! Fuuuuuck!”

My pussy spasmed and contracted around him, holding him in a tight embrace.

As I came hard, he slid me from the countertop and held my ass in his hands, lifting me up and down on his dick.

The kitchen was filled with windows. I supposed he never had visitors, because all the blinds were open.

Anyone could drive up and see a free porno in action.

His grunts were so fucking sexy. My legs tightened around his waist as pleased the both of us. “Delaney, look at me, baby.”
