I pulled the cattle prod out from my jacket pocket.

There’s something freeing about using a toy meant for livestock on a woman. There was no shock of a sound, but a subtle zip, and yet the voltage alone would leave her muscles sore. “Time out,” she said.

I stepped forward, still holding the cattle prod in my hand. She narrowed her eyes, stroking the scratched skin. “I’m serious, Ethan. Cut it out. I’m bleeding.”

Wil and Axe stepped out from behind the trees, coming into her view. For the first time, she realized that she wouldn’t be going back to the club that night.

“What’s going on?” she stammered. “Wait.” Her lips were shaking, recognizing the other two brothers coming closer now. I stepped closer too, behind her. “I know you. You’re—”

“The Adler brothers,” I said. I plunged the hood over her head.
