“How much?”
“Twenty grand.”
“And what do I have to do for twenty grand?”
I know she’s thinking the worst. “Nothing more than you did last night. I’m hosting some business acquaintances.”
She glances away. “Can I think about it?”
“You have until tomorrow night.”
She looks at me but doesn’t reply. I hold her gaze until she turns away and opens the door, slides out onto the curb, and walks up the steps to her building.
She doesn’t look back but I watch her until the door clicks shut behind her.
Only then do I let out my breath and relax.
The game has just changed and the old rules don’t apply anymore.
I’m so fucking down with it.
I stare at my phone and ponder. I send a text. Settle back. And start to plan.
